Remember that when your cranking, the engine weter pump is pumping raw water into the exhaust systme thus filling the water-lift muffler and exhause hoses. If you crank too long, the muffler will fill and backflood into the engine.

I do not recommend shutting off the raw water inlet as a solution as the impeller may wipe the waterpump walls dry and then be dammaged.

Water lift mufflers have drains installed to allow draining for winterizing end preventing flodding the cylinder(s).

I replace my impeller every spring and
throw the old in the old but still good stuff box just in case. If you coat
the impeller with Vaseline, yeah I know only for dry lips, not condoms, and
other such items, it is absolutely new looking when I pull it out. So running
the engine with the raw intake off does not seem to hurt it at all. But
remember if its only < 50 rev without water its not going to hurt it much.Â
As for the water muffler I have never drained it just pump the antifreeze it
until it spits out the back of the boat…… no problem no shoe no worries…….
