RE: F32 Ice box lid etc

Posted by ron barr (rwhb@…>)

Anyone come up with a solution on the Hoyt F32 for two minor
galley items:

Best way to hold up the ice box lid — not shock cord please.
2.
Somewhere to put a paper towel roll holder.
3.
Also is there a source for the stern fold down ladder – I saw it
on the F32 on eBay

Just some winter planning thoughts. Thanks

Lance,

I’m sorry to say it is so. Although I love “Fantasy” I’m going to
downsize a bit. Maybe in the 36 foot range. But I will be boatless for a while
(if I’m able to sell her). I’m sure I’ll stay with Freedom, but will have to
wait a year or so while I take care of some business ventures. Anyway, have a

Doesn’t that position for the towel roll get in the way of
opening the ice box?

My issue with shock cord is that it can bounce around underway
in seas.

Hi Ron,
I notice at the boat shows, many
manufacturers use a spring to hold up the ice box
lid, so you may want to check that out. I don’t
have any problem with using the shock cord on
mine. The lid is quite heavy with the butcher
block on top, so I’m not sure a spring would be
robust enough to keep it raised.
As far as the paper towel holder goes,
wherever it fits and is handy enough to reach but not be in the way.

Good luck,

I have springs on my icebox lid and they work well, until you accidentally brush against them while bouncing around in the ocean. The lid really hurts when it hits your head, and then it slams shut with your fingers in the crack. It also makes you feel terrible when it slams down on the heads of your young children. I’m planning to add a second set of springs, so I have them on both sides of the lid, thereby reducing the the chances of a fatality.TomF44 JackrabbitBermudaOn Jan 7, 2008, at 10:50 AM, Thomas Wales wrote:Hi Ron,I notice at the boat shows, many manufacturers use a spring to hold up the ice box lid, so you may want to check that out. It’s not a question of “robustness” of the spring, although they are
sold in various sizes. The problematic robustness is that of the
attachment points (the screw is “in shear” on the box side, with no
way to through bolt it)

The spring is completely compressed and held in column when the
weight of the hatch or reefer lid is on it…think “screen door
spring” unextended, except that it’s not designed to stretch, only
bend. The only reason it IS a “spring” is to permit it
to be bent (when knocked “out of column”) to allow the lid to close.

As Tom Vesey pointed out, this can occur at inopportune moments and
unexpectedly…even if you have two…and using two requires both
hands simultaneously (one on each spring) in order to close the lid,
with the lid then resting on your forearms as you move your hands out
of the way of the closing lid…awkward at best. Tends to result in
dropped beers.

A “belt and suspenders” approach would be to use one spring and
attach a piece of line with a loop in the end of it inside the box
lid, then hook it over a hook mounted on the overhead or cabinetry
behind the lid, but if you’re gonna do THAT, why bother with the
spring?

I too use shock cord which will hold either or both of my reefer lid
and freezer box lid. My cockpit lazzarette lids have a 1/4" braided
line attached on the inside with a bowline on the free end which I
loop over the adjacent winch. Originally (and for the first few
replacements), they were shock cord, but shock cord deteriorates
rapidly in our summer heat here, so I went for the “no stretch”
approach. Pure analog and cheap, also more “shippy”.

A gas strut (like on a car hood, hatchback, or trunk lid) would work
on a hatch lid, but probably not on a reefer lid, as it would require
a positive latch to prevent the lid from opening, and would tend
to “weaken” the gasket seal normally provided by the weight of the
hatch…beyond that, the strut would be “cold” (less effective) when
the box was cold and would have to be designed to work properly at
the temperatures encountered. This might result in the hatch lid
flying up and hitting you in the chin when opening a “hot” box…

Jay,
are you looking for another boat, or is this it? Whoever ends up
with
your 40 is going to get an excellent vessel.

Thanks for the feedback — I guess that makes sense.

Hi Ron,
I notice at the boat shows, many
manufacturers use a spring to hold up the ice box
lid, so you may want to check that out. I don’t
have any problem with using the shock cord on
mine. The lid is quite heavy with the butcher
block on top, so I’m not sure a spring would be
robust enough to keep it raised.
As far as the paper towel holder goes,
wherever it fits and is handy enough to reach but not be in the way.

Good luck,

Anyone come up with a solution on the Hoyt F32 for two minor galley items:

  1. Best way to hold up the ice box lid — not shock cord please.

  2. Somewhere to put a paper towel roll holder.

  3. Also is there a source for the stern
fold down ladder – I saw it on the F32 on eBay

Just some winter planning thoughts. Thanks

Lance,

I’m sorry to say it is so. Although I love
“Fantasy” I’m going to downsize a bit. Maybe in
the 36 foot range. But I will be boatless for a
while (if I’m able to sell her). I’m sure I’ll
stay with Freedom, but will have to wait a year
or so while I take care of some business
ventures. Anyway, have a Happy New Year Lance!!

Ouch I feel your pain. I had an Allied Seabreeze years ago with
those springs used as stays on the cockpit lockers — my head still has dents.

I have springs on my icebox lid and they work well, until you accidentally
brush against them while bouncing around in the ocean. The lid really hurts
when it hits your head, and then it slams shut with your fingers in the crack.
It also makes you feel terrible when it slams down on the heads of your young
children.

I’m planning to add a second set of springs, so I have them
on both sides of the lid, thereby reducing the the chances of a fatality.
