Re: frozen seacock handle

  1. Try to never use hammer

  2. When hauled, remove the clamps and the hose. Spray lubricant (WD 40 works) into the sea cock from both sides. Wait. Keep trying to move the handle.

  3. replace if 2 doesn’t work.

Good luck

The seacock through which waste is discharged from my boat seems to be seized.
It’s a basic
Perko, and the handle will not even respond to a hammer. Any ideas?

Before replacing the valve, try a blowtorch to heat it up and then
gently turn the handle.

To replace the valve you have to heat it up anyway to loosen the 3M
5200 caulk they surely used.

BLOWTORCH ! ! Many of bronze ones have rubber in them and no heat more than a hair dryer to plastic. Remove it and let it soak in CLR ( diluted acid that removes the salt build up ) overnight. “michel.capel” <michel.capel@…> wrote: Before replacing the valve, try a blowtorch to heat

When you say ‘both sides’, do you mean inside and outside the hull?
Because thus far, I’ve been just spraying penetrant into the valve from inside
the boat. (I’ve
removed the hose)

Has anyone used a product called Break-Free?

Andre,

As far as I know ball valves have no rubber inside, just a Nylon or
Delrin seat that closes off the ball. These plastics can have some
heat. Indeed, It’s not wise to heat up a throughhull valve until it
is cherry red. An electric paint remover blower might be enough to
provide the heat. But I like blowtorches; just like chainsaws and
angle-grinders they are masculine tools, unlike floorsweepers and
infrared waterlevels. ;^}
