Re Ground Tackle for Carib

For your Freedom 32 I would certainly suggest also using a 35# Delta
or Spade followed by at least 60 or 90 ft of 5/16 chain… You will
sleep quite well at night knowing the rode will never get trapped by
the keel and your rode will not chafe on the rocks or coral. Also
that chain will set either of those anchors in just about any sand,
grass, or whatever. I personally also use a 55# Fisherman for my
Freedom 33. Regards John

Anytime an anchor discussion ensues, I am reminded of the analogy of anchors and spouses/partners.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

One mate’s plumb is another’s prune.

Sound sleeping depends less on the anchor and more on the mate.

Blind dates and anchor recommendations are from the same box. Neither is returnable without painful loss of face.

Explaining a fidelity failure of a mate pales in comparison to the same failure in a anchor. The whole anchorage knows.

Setting the anchor is not unlike making a commitment to marriage. Don’t do either in the dark.

When choosing a mate or an anchor, listen to the little voice in your head. Don’t go for the low cost version. The is not about the manufacturer’s warranty.

Divorce is like cutting loose your anchor that refuses to release. You know it is going to cost you a lot, but the alternative is even worse.

Our recommedation (after dragging a number of times on the sandy bottom) is that you buy a substantial amount of chain.

It stays down, adds weight, keeps the anchor dug in and at the best purchase in the sand.

Three boatlengths of chain has made all the difference in the world.

Thanks folks. I looks like there is a CQR and about 100’ of chain in our future… along with an electric windlass. That lasts is going to hurt, but I really think it’s part of the package. Any recommendations?

IMTRA often has has ‘scratch and dents’ of windlasses on ebay. I bought mine
from them (I was able to go to them and see it). I got a lofrans progress I for
less than half price. I was brand new but had a slight scratch that you would
never notice. I have been happy with the perfromance of the windlass, and having
it makes all the difference when anchoring.

We installed a new Lofrans windlass three season back. Have used it probably 200 times since. It is very reliable. I asked the installer to allow me to be with him throughout and learned all I need to know for troubleshooting and service. There was a solenoid problem. Lofrans fedexd a replacement free and I was able to remove and replace easily. Other than that, it provides me a great deal of hassle free foredeck work. It is one the critical systems on our 45cc.
