Re: gun mount spinnaker with dousing sock?

yes dousing sock and it works great with the gunmount I just rigged mine on my F21

I was rummaging through the lockers in my F-25 over the weekend (no wind!) and
found
what I think is a dousing sock for the spinnaker. It is a sleeve about 16"
across (when flat)
and 14.5 feet long with grommets on both ends (but no hoop). If this isn’t a
dousing sock,
let me know. If it is, has anyone used one of these with a gun mount???

Thanks, Greg

I’m curious how to rig it and use it. Do you attach a block at the top of the
sail/halyard and
run a line thru that block to raise the sock? And another line attached to the
lower end of
the sock to lower it? Did you lead the lines to the cockpit? Do you release the
clews
before/while lowering the sock? Does yours have a hoop?

Thanks, Greg

ON MY 21 the sock is tied down to the deck. A line runs thru the sock from front to back then to the center of the spinnaker. you release the halyard and the outhauls on the spinnaker and pull the line that runs thru the sock and it sucks the spinnaker into the sock. It works great, but when my spinnaker got old, I ripped the center right out. I think my original spinnaker was defective, as it only lasted 2 or 3 years.

Hi Bill-

OK, we’re talking about different socks. Yours is the one that goes with
Hoyt’s gun
mount system. I had one of those on my F-21 too. This sock (seems to be called a
‘dousing’ sock) is vertical, and slides up and down over the spinnaker. The
spinnaker
halyard stays up, and the spinnaker kind of works like a roller-furled jib.
Raise the sock
and the spinnaker is flying, lower the sock and it is all gathered up in the
sock cover.

The F-25 uses a fiberglass scoop in front of the Hoyt retriever bag. My boat
didn’t come
with one of these, but it did come with the dousing sock. Maybe that’s the way
the last guy
used it. Also, I’m beginning to wonder about having a Hoyt retriever bag made
like the F
-21, without the fiberglass scoop. As I understand it, the larger boats don’t
have the
fiberglass scoop, only the F-25. I’m still trying to figure it all out…

Thanks, Greg
