RE- Hot Water Tanks

Posted by Michael Gillin (michael_w_gillin@…>)

Hi Folks ; On My Freedom 32 I just replaced an old outdated Raritan
Hot Water Tank.
The replacement is a 6 Gallon Unit.
Once the old heat exchanger hose were removed from the old tank some
loss of antifreeze occured.

After installing the new tank I have to fill the hoses by hand to
displace the air in the hoses.
After starting the engine I removed the input hose from the new tank
and waited untill the air bubbles stopped and antifreeze started to
flow.

Because the thermostat does not control the water from the heat
exchanger I should have been heating the water after a short time.

After running the engine I checked the heat exchanger hose and they
were cold.

The hot water tank is higher than the engine and does not have a
surge tank installed.

Even so I should have had hot water ???

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause of the problem ?
The old tank although rusted delivered hot water off the engine.
The AC side of the new tank works fine.

I appreciate any ideas to solve this problem.

I talked to Mack Boring as this is a YanMar engine and they suggested
installing a surge tank to elimenate any future air blockage.

Thanks Folks

When I installed my new IsoTemp water heater two years ago, my engine mechanic showed me a trick to get all the air out of the system. My tank is also higher than my engine (Perkins 4-108). Although it may be a little displeasing, remove the coolant cap off the header tank, clean the opening, place mouth inside opening sealing with your cheeks. Blow long and steady, listen after each blow and you will hear the system belch (or gurgle if you will). Repeat until gurgling stops. This gets the air out. Works for me every time.
