The fin keel WAS NOT made of cast iron. It was made of lead. The draft of the TPI (USA) fin keel version is 3’ 9"

Sorry John,

I guess you would know better than I as my boat is a shoal keel. I
don’t know where I heard cast iron. Maybe I dreamed it?

Respectfully,

Ken,

It all depends upon where you live…

In the US there were two keel options (a cast iron fin keel
drawing
3’0" or the fiberglass enclosed lead shoal keel drawing 2’) both
are
fixed keels. You can find this by going to the www.fredom21.info
site and clicking on Documentation and then clicking Original
Sales
Brochure.

The British built Freedom 21s had several other keel choices one
of
which featured retractable fins. You can find info on the British
keels on the same Documentation tab. Click on the last link on the
page for that info and photos.

On US boats the sailing preformance is probably better for the fin
keel but the shoal keel does offer advantages for sallow inland
lakes
and trailer sailing.
