RE: Lowrance iWay 600C v. Garmin 545 Chartplotter

Seems like a pretty good deal if you want both a road and
waterway plotter. But it doesn’t seem to be the best for marine use. Also
I am not sure about the screen brightness nor the mounting options for use say
next to wheel.
Supposedly sealed but is it completely weathertight?
How about charts? Unlike Garmin these would be extra I assume.

Have you looked at the Garmin 545? This is of course more
expensive, in fact about twice the price. However it has a great picture, 5”
VGA screen, sonar capability, and includes all the new G2 chart series of the
US. In the long run it might be a better buy for marine purposes.

Incidentally I would appreciate feedback from anyone about the
Garmin and other plotters – it is on our buy list for the Spring. Also best
discounted sources.

Thanks

Can anyone comment on this chartplotter? If
functions as a street and
marine navaigator. Price seems nice, around $350.

You might think of the Garmin 178 Marine GPS and Sounder. Very compact, excellent screen, fully loaded with detailed charts…and down in the less than $700 range now… Was near our compass and did not cause problems…which is something to consider. That Lowrance has a very good screen quality and resolution. Better, I think,
tnah the Garmin.I think it’s an older model, but I liked them. Some models on
that line had screens that were not easy tosee in sunlight, but so did most GPS
units at that time. Lowance improved some of theirs, but I’m not sure if this
model was among them. You should go to a West marine or oither store and check
it out against others. If the guy will let you (and if it has power, such as
your car 12V lighter receptacle), take it outside in the sun and see how it
looks (leave him something valuabe, such as your watch, your wife or your kids
for security.

On second thought, some of you may value the GPS more than your wife or kids…
