I am a fairly new Freedom owner (F30) and all this discussion makes me
wonder what IS the ballpark cost to replace a carbon fiber mast? And
do most Freedom owners make sure their insurance covers replacement value?

There are several Freedoms here in the Netherlands and as far as I
know, none of the owners has ever had trouble insuring the masts. Of
course, you have to make the insurers aware of the fact that you
have carbon masts and what they cost. I told them this when I
renewed my insurance a few months ago, and they didn’t lift an
eyebrow when I told them the cost of the masts. They stated that
only in the case of total loss of both masts there could be a
problem because this would near the value of the boat, but one mast
lost would be no problem.

Hello everybody!
I´m new to this group and also new to carbon fiber unstayed cat
ketch
rigs…not new to offshore sailing though.
I am considering to buy a UK built 1985 F35, found a lot of
valuable
information in this group already.
One of the issues I have is the question if the boat can be
insured
including possible mast damage…as a renewal of the masts would
cost
almost as much as the whole boat.
I have a very good insurance agent (sailor himself) who is
confident
he will find an insurance that does it.
However, the insurance would only pay if the masts came down due
to
unusual circumstances, not due to normal wear and tear or if the
lifespan is exceeded.
Now I wonder: what can be considered the normal lifespan of a
1980s
Freedom carbon fiber mast? What is normal wear and tear?
And: if the masts have been pre-damaged at some point in their
history, and then come down in a lilght breeze after I bought the
boat…can that be found out in a survey afterwards?
Or even in a survey before buying the boat? With mirrors to check
from the inside? Or even with X-rays?
Will be thankful for any kind of information you can come up with!
Cheers,
Fred

Balpark figure is $30-$40k. But CF masts can be repaired, depending
on the damage.

When I first bought my F-33 I spoke with
Ted Van Dusen of Composite Engineering. He indicated for the 33 a range of
10-15k. This was 4-5 years ago and wasn’t a firm estimate.
