Re: offshore travel with children.

We take our kids out in the ocean all the time (since they were 3 days old). Our “kids” are now 16, 14 and 11.

We LOVE our Freedom 32. On our older boats with younger kids we put up nets. It gave us great confidence when sailing. We likewise put up a locking net for the companionway for the nights at anchor.

Having the F-32 set up to sail from the cockpit is really great during rough weather. We find the boat both fast and sea-kindly. When well rigged and in order, easy to single hand from the cockpit. The kids have trouble sailing her. They adored the aft cabin when younger, but now want their own space.

The only complaint is that we wish we had a sugar-scoop. It seems easier to board after swimming and to exit to the dingy.

Other than that, the ease of sailing makes our days on the water more fun.

We have 3 children aged 5,7 and 8. We are considering a one
two year journey and have always admired Gary Hoyt’s designs. Our past
boat was an older Wauquiez centre boarder that was 38 feet LOA designed by Ted
Hood.

We would have to hear from others with experience with kids
and long distance travelling on a Freedom.

Nicholas,

If you read Garry Hoyt’s article the Freedom Story, you will see that
his early catketch designs were meant as the ultimate cruising design.
His designs are easily handled, stable seaboing vessels with a minimum
of vulnerable technology. His first boat, Freedom 40 #1 with a centre
cockpit (the pirate ship) did not even have an engine but instead a
pair of oars! The only thing is that the hulls are quite narrow
compared with a modern sloop. This improves the seagoing abily but
costs you some interior space.

Best,

Michel
