Do you know how to get the ends off the heat exchanger? The bolts
are coming out quite easily, but I don’t see a way to get these lids
off. I’m hesitant to put a large wrench on the end and just start
turning the lid off.
Are these two hose clamps around the heat exchanger the only
fasteners? It looks like there is also a platform that is attached
to the engine back. Or is this just where the hoseclamps sit around?

Be careful not to shear it off, if you do you will have to extract
the
broken stud fromthe head. If you do not remove these two bolts it
is
almost impossible to remove the header tank due to the hose
connecting
the tank to the exhaust manifold, and the rigid copper tubing
(return
line) from the exhaust manifold to the header tank. I just did mine
today. When reassembling, be careful not to disturb the new gasket
or
damage the top of the new thermostat when placing the tank back
into
position. Also, concerning the heat exchanger (mine is also at the
rear
of the engine under the oil filter), always use two wrenches when
removing the zinc. One on the zinc plug and the other on the
fitting on
the tank. These copper tanks are very soft and it is easy to tear
the
fitting right out of the tank if the plug is very tinght. Also,
make sure
you place rubber protectors under the hose clamps used to secure
the tank
in place. Otherwise, the clamps will severely dent the tank, which
usually results in no warranty when a shop boils and services the
exchanger. Good luck!

had it boiled - I don’t think the zinc had been changed in the
previous two seasons. When I pulled the zinc plug, the zinc was
firmly jammed into the heat exchanger. I’ve written about this
before, but if you decide to remove the heat exchanger, do
yourself
a favor and drain the oil and remove the filter. then getting the
exchanger off is a piece of cake.

days of my Volvo Penta 2003 in the F33… Does anybody

thermostat is located on a lowline 1980 early 4.108
Perkins?
Besides: this engine is really a hybride
Perkins/Westerbeke;
the
block
is Perkins, but the exhaust elbow and the heat exchanger
are
Westerbeke parts; who knows which parts also; is this
common??

Michel,
the heat exchanger is held on by the hoses and the two bands. the
platform is attached to the back of the engine and the bands should go
around it and the exchanger. the lower hose on the port side is a PITA
to get on and off.
Also, when you refill the coolant, don’t forget that it’ll ‘burp’ and
you will have to add more.

If you have the same heat exchanger only the port side comes off by removing the single bolt. The other end is soldered on, so I recommend you have a pro do the work. You are correct, the exchanger sets into a cradle the the hose clamps secure it to. I understand Perkins also used a different exchanger on which both ends are removeable. Maybe you have this one. Good luck with your project.
