Hi All,
It looks like it is time to replace the original 1981 Yanmar 3GMD diesel
with a new or newer one. The 3GM30F is no longer in production and
would have been the obvious choice but it has been replaced with a
newer design,the 3YM30. I remember at least one of the F-33s that had a
new design engine(3YM30)put in. Thoughts??
Any and all input on repowering would be appreciated. What kind of
issues came up, how well or not so well did the installation go,etc etc.

Well, our Freedom 33 was re-powered with a 3YM30 and I can tell you what I
know…but overall it seems like a good idea.

We didn’t do the job, but the engine had 4 hours on it when we purchased
it–so it is new and we get the consequences.
We have hull #14, which is a centerboard, and has a (probably original)
2-blade fixed prop.
The install seems to fit where it belongs OK, and access to needed parts is
reasonable.
The engine had sat for a year (or so) when we got our hands on it. By that
time, the engine mounts had failed. (One of them bottomed out whenever the
engine was running under ~1100rpm. It sounded like maybe only two cylinders
were firing?) The engine mounts I’ve got are NOT Yanmar mounts, and are shorter
than Yanmar mounts, so I’m not sure if I’m going to have to re-engineer the
engine beds to accept Yanmar mounts, or find a different replacment.
We motored the ICW from Hilton Head, SC to Beaufort NC, then put the boat in
the yard for other larger projects and/or storage. The engine is going to sit a
bit longer then get its 50 hour valve adjustment when we splash again.
As for electric–I’ve always wanted something like Solomon Technologies
electric drive (with a diesel HVDC genset), but I’ve not had either A) a boat
that needed a new engine, or B) an argument that would convince myself and
especially my wife that the extra cost is worth it.

If you go with a pure electric drive, it will put some extreme limits on your
range–we could probably run for a few days on a full tank of diesel, but I
wouldn’t expect a battery system to exceed a few hours on a charge. In fact
motoring for more than an hour wold require a HUGE bank of batteries. But it
will be quiet, reliable, and probably work well if you don’t need the range.

Michelle’s system follows UK ‘rules’ too - despite the fact that we’re
in the EU the UK often chooses to opt out. His system is the same as I

I sold the Yanmar 3GMD for $600 - and glad to get it.

I have not put it in the water since adjusting the prop, but will post
once I see how the new pitch works. Range is a geometric figure to
power - ie.: 1 hour at full power vs. all day at 20% power

I have 2 banks of four Group 32 AGM batteries. I have a 48v/200w solar
panel for recharging the motor batteries and a 12v/50w panel for the
house bank. If I want/need a faster charge I crank up the 2000w Honda
generator and plug in the Zivan 48v charger that is on a 1/2/off
switch. That way I can continue using the solar panel on one bank
while the Honda charges the other.

I won’t be the first cruiser out there under electric, but maybe the
first Freedom??

The solar panel can recharge from a 50% to 60% discharge in a couple
days of good sunlight. The generator will bring the bank back to
90-95% in about 2 1/2 hours. Using the generator to bring the bank
back to 100% is not effective - but it is a very effective job for the
solar panel, given the right solar controller.

I sold the Yanmar 3GMD for $600 - and glad to get it.

I have not put it in the water since adjusting the prop, but will post
once I see how the new pitch works. Range is a geometric figure to
power - ie.: 1 hour at full power vs. all day at 20% power

I have 2 banks of four Group 32 AGM batteries. I have a 48v/200w solar
panel for recharging the motor batteries and a 12v/50w panel for the
house bank. If I want/need a faster charge I crank up the 2000w Honda
generator and plug in the Zivan 48v charger that is on a 1/2/off
switch. That way I can continue using the solar panel on one bank
while the Honda charges the other.

I won’t be the first cruiser out there under electric, but maybe the
first Freedom??
