Having just returned from a week of fog off of Cape Cod and The
Vineyard, I highly recommend having a VHF handy in addition to the
radar reflector. I have a handheld that scans channels. If you
monitor 16, you will hear the big boats and ferries announce their
arrivals and departures as well as narrow passages through holes and
channels etc. We were able to steer well clear of an 80’ motoryacht
doing 24 knots in less than 1/4 visibility while in vineyard sound,
just through VHF communication. He cleary could “see” me and
identified me by my approx lat/lon, so having that handy helps so you
know when they are talking to you!
Enjoy!

William is correct regarding the Davis radar reflector. However, I
prefer it elevated as high as possible. I have a flag halyard that
runs from a block attached to the masthead truck to my bow pulpit.
The radar reflector is carried there below the mast head and above
the jib stay. It is out of the way and does not bang against the
mast.— In freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com, “summersloop”

Remembering that the fog
can be a factor this time of year in the Northeast, I would like
to find a suitable radar
deflector before making the trip. Any advice / recommendations
about what type to
purchase and where to mount on a Freedom 30 would be appreciated. Thanks…
