Running Backs
On Cayenne, a 44, I replaced the 3/16 wire, vinyl coated wire with 8mm V100
Vectron. NO problems so far.

Just an Idea

Brian,
someone else suggested going with vectron or just the kevlar core of
some braided line. I’d like to know more about your running backs -
where you anchor them, do you have any ‘purchase’ with them, or any
other ‘learning curve’ issues. You can contact me here or off-board.
Also, did you take the running backs off your main? I’m considering
it. I can’t imagine needing them, and they end up just slapping
against the mast.

Thanks,
Lance

Lance,

I wouldn’t use the kevlar core of braided lines. This core degrades
quickly in UV light. That’s why they have an outer shield. What you
could use is a line like DynaOne (Dyneema, something like kevlar)
that resists UV very well. It has no core. It has a couple of times
the strength of stainless wire of the same diameter and is used for
backstays, runners and even shrouds nowadays. It’s mainly sold in a
shiny gray color that resembles wire. It’s made by a German firm
called Gleistein. I used it as a centreboard halyard on my F33. For
runners and topping lifts, you can use the thinnest 6mm line. You
can lift an elephant with that.
