Anybody know which issue had Practical sailor’s last test of
chart plotters? I am looking for one to mount at the helm on a pod on a F32 –
anyone’s suggestions appreciated. My partner seems to want something bigger
than the Garmin 5” maybe a Standard? Anything much bigger would seem to be obstructive
at the helm??

unfortunately, it’s hard to find a good gps
with a large screen at a
reasonable price. I’ve become convinced that you need to look at your
navigation as an entire system these days. What instruments do you
need/want? Depth and speed, obviously, but windspeed? do you need it
or is it nice to have? Radar? GPS? AIS? VHF yes of course, HF? Maybe.
XM or Sirius weather? Then you have to decide what level of
integration you want. Weather and radar overlays on your chart
plotter? Just charts, with a separate radar? self contained ais? How
much power are you willing to devote to your instruments? A Raymarine
E120 display is big, bright, and beautiful, but it also draws amps
quickly. Even on Glory, with 3 house 8Ds, we have to be a little
careful about whether we want the autopilot, GPS, and Radar displays
all turned on at the same time. Even if you don’t plan to build your
system all at once, it’s still worth laying out all of the components
so that you can decide how best to interconnect them (or not at all).
When we bought Bright Star, it had no GPS at all. The datamarine
instruments had no networking capability, and the windspeed didn’t
work. We ended up putting a Garmin 2010 unit at the nav station that
we could read, at least basic information, from the helm. I’ve been
happy with Garmin products, but find their networking too proprietary
and their charts too expensive and difficult to update (this is just
one sailor’s opinion).
If you’re just interested in a chartplotter, one approach might be to
see which chart cards you like best - Cmap, BlueChart, Navionics all
have different looks and feels to them - and then choose the best
plotter that supports your specific chart requirements. Practical
sailor did a review about a year ago on the different chart options,
might be a good place to start.

Ron, of course it’s in one of the issues I can’t find, but I believe
the one you’re talking about is August 07. Garmin 492 won. There was
a more comprehensive review in April 2006, where the Garmin 178C won
value and Lowrance LMS-337C DF won Best Choice. FWIW the Lowrance was
the only NMEA 2000 compatible plotter in the test group.

Thanks Lance – all I need to know is the month so I can research
my library.
Right now we are considering the Standard Horizon – input from
anybody for the F32 appreciated.

Ron,
I have the Standard Horizon 175C that is mounted at the helm. It works fine in bright sun or at night. I have an older version 170 mounted at the Nav station… I am a member of club C-map and I can tell you that I am extremely happy with Standard Horizon. I am on the west coast of Florida and depths shift and are critical for sailing these waters. The C-map program I use is for the U.S. East Coast down throught the Bahamas all the way around to north of Tampa. I use paper charts for these areas as backup and I can tell you that the C-map on my Standard Horizon is as accurate as the paper and the depths are more accurate, because C-map updates every six months or as necessary. Standard Horizon is very easy to use and has more useful data than I will probably ever need or use.
Standard Horizon is now owned by Jeppson Marine. I have no plans to use any product but C-map for anywhere in the world in conjuntion with these monitors. Viewing photos on my monitor of critical passes is almost worth the price of the product.

The Standard it would seem isn’t waterproof at the
back unlike Garmin — any issues with this Ian

Ron,
Actually, I have a dodger and bimini so that is not much of an issue. The unit I have resists water ingress. The only place moisture can get in is in the housing where you insert the C-map chip. However when I am in a rain storm and it is blowing in from every direction I have a zip lock bag that I put on the plotter. I don’t know that I use the bag because it is an issue of waterproofness, rather than it is easier to lift the baggie and look at the screen than it is to constantly wipe the rain water off the screen.
