RE: Re: F-32 Hoyt Marblehead

Posted by ron barr (rwhb@…>)

Well we bought the one in Marblehead some months ago. And it is
a Hoyt. Yachtworld (or the brokers) are very poor about keeping things up to
date. And for 40% or so less than asking I might add, since the hull
seems to be a little soft in one spot fwd. So far pretty happy. The finish and
cosmetics are v. good – new head lining, upholstery, radar, good bimini
and dodger, two winter covers and plenty of spare parts etc. Needs a new
GPS plotter, upper lifelines, dinghy and maybe a self tailing winch for the
main. We also broke down and ordered new sails although we could have pushed
another season or two.

Prior question — suggestions for dinghies for this
boat??? Anyone???

Ahoy!..I feel better now! Not long ago I placed a similar request asking the
Freedom owners the same question and I am still confused also. Remember the
recent e-bay Hoyt that was auctioned by a charity organization and was won by a
fellow on this Freedom Owners group? That was listed as a Hoyt 32 but was of
the lesser beam and displacement as if it were a Mull and I believe it was an
'84. The fellow who bought it placed a noter here within the past 2 weeks
expressing his satisfaction with what he won. Soooo maybe the factory was
calling the Mull a Hoyt??? Still unresolved or also just another dumb guy!

That boat is very obviously a
Hoyt 32, so I don’t find it in the least confusing. The width and
the weight may be wrong, but the photos leave no room for doubt.

I check Yachtworld frequently and right now there are 1984
F-32 in
Marblehead that states the beam is 10’9" and disp of 7660.
Sounds /looks like a Mull design to me!!! So you see the year doesn’t
tell you much… and they have other 1984 F-32’s that are Hoyt
designed. Confusing??? Nah I’m just dumb!

So that’s the one you bought Ron.

Congratulations! Hmmm you are right Yachtworld & brokers are not up
to date or accurate with specs. They described your boat as
" Exceptionally well kept…one of the best 32’s out there…the new
owner would be lucky" Then you tell us there is a soft spot fwd,
needs a new GPS, upper lifelines, new sails!!!
Yup sounds like an exceptionally well kept boat alright!!!

Hate to see an average kept boat…lol!

But I guess the price was right but not a sail away or or turn key
boat like what I am looking for.

Well it was certainly sail away, but I am pretty fussy. The
possibility of a turnkey boat nearly 25 years old seems pretty remote to me. It
was well kept I think. The hull problem was a nasty surprise to the owner and
certainly not evident without careful survey. It could probably be sailed for a
while just the way it is. The sails were OK and we used them last year but
after 10-15 years or more?? The GPS works fine but the screen is small uses
the old no longer available cartridges and like all electronics is dated. I
have boxes of SS parts and it is well equipped. The one on eBay looked
considerably more beaten up to me and that opinion is from the pictures which
usually flatter. Note that the one we bought has the sit down nav station which
I really like.

There was one boat I saw advertised in CA but doesn’t seem
to be on line anymore which looked very good indeed. However I figure we have
$20,000 to spare to fix up as we go along. We also looked at the one in
Branford and the one in Bristol which is a Mull not a Hoyt.

Yes it is a Mull and in good shape. The lady lost her husband, as I recall when we looked at it, and is fairly anxious to sell. A bit on the high $ side for us and of course not the room below of the Hoyt.
