Rudder Play

Two inch play sounds excessive to me. I have replaced rudder bearings on Hoyt 32 and Seaview Boat Yard did my Mull 36/38 both with about an inch of play, reducing each to about 1/2 inch. The lower SS ring on the 32 was out of round, which was removed and corrected as part of the process. Both my boats were done after consulting Freedom so it seems that it depends upon who you talk with as to whether 2in play is reasonable.

Kevin,I am the new owner of a Freedom 38 and just went through a survey which stated that there was play in the rudder. I contacted Freedom yachts and they referred me to Warren River Boatworks, Paul Dennis (?), owner. He use to work for Freedom. Paul explained that Freedom built in some play in the rudder. Approx. 1 to 2 inches at the bottom of the rudder blade. He explained that if the bearing was to tight it could cause the rudder to seize under load. Paul’s phone number is: 401-245-6949. — In freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com, “Kevin Ogden” <kcogden@e…> wrote:> Most likely needs new packing in the stern gland. I had similar problem after boat laid up in yard for 3 years (and packing presumably dried out), and not knowing better, assumed it just needed greasing. Did that and all seemed well, but then launched off across Atlantic, and spent next 4 weeks pumping like **** during storms, or tightening up the gland nuts till there was little leakage, but VERY stiff steering. Seem to remember 90 pumps or so on the manual bilge pump every 30 minutes when the weather was rocking and rolling.> ----- Original Message ----- > From: goldbdan > To: freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2004 8:21 PM> Subject: [freedomyachts2003] F45 Rudder Play> > > > Our rudder on our F45 has a fair amount of play.
