Re: Re: Lewmar Ocean Hatches

Good Mornin’ in response to the conversations about replacing the port lights and info on where to send Lewmar hatches to be repaired…has anyone replaced the gasket material around the lenses in the hatches themself? Is that something that really needs to be sent to those guys in CT (www.selectplastics.com) to do? It seems pretty expensive and almost worth buying whole new hatches instead? I just rebedded my hatches two weeks ago as I was promised that that was more than likely the source of my hatch leaks…the lewmar rep. was wrong. They still leak and I’m pretty sure the gaskets need to be replaced. Cheers, Melissa s/v Acedia F38"Pollution is a silent form of violence" -Ralph Nader

Melissa,
if you’re just doing the gaskets, you probably don’t need Select to
do that - if you’re getting them reglazed, then they’re definitely
worth it. When I had the forward hatch done on bright star, I looked
at ‘simply’ replacing the hatch with a new bomar or something. The
problem is that no currently manufactured hatch fits the dimensions
of the original, so simply replacing would have become simply
enlarging the hole in one direction while simply reducing the hole
in another, and simply building a lip… well you get it. The new
glazing/seals were less than half the cost of new.

How was your sail last week?

Hi Lance! Yeah, I don’t think I have to replace the glass on the hatches, it’s just the seal around the lenses. I was told to replace the gaskets that a professional Lewmar place repair place down in CT was the only ones to do it (I assume that its Select from that last email from the guy who sent his hatches there). I’m really not sure. Last weeks sail? Which day? I went out Friday March 31 and it was the best sailing day EVER!! Beautiful weather, sunny and warm…perfect wind. Great sailing. Then I attempted to go out the Sunday after…well, things didn’t go as well. I lost a batten, broke a few cars on the main’s track, and broke my throttle handle. Oh well. I got back just fine anyway. Melissa,
I think I must have seen you on Sunday - you were really bundled up
on your way back in. I envy you though - I still have to get Bright
Star’s sails out of hock.

I am in the beginning of replacing the hatch gaskets on my F30. Looks very straight forward but will report in a few days how the job goes. Also, the hatch latches can leak. Will try to cover that point, also. Gasket material is a bit pricy ($35/hatch)…but much cheaper than a complete overhaul (near $350 each from memory.
