Reading the various posts about creaking masts I am reminded
that we have to do something about the wiring etc banging around inside the
mast on our Hoyt 32 – it makes sleeping forwards pretty well impossible and god
knows how the last owner put up with it. Since there are internal halyards
foaming up the mast to deaden sound is not acceptable – I am open to any suggestions
please!!! I have considered running up the foam hot water pipe insulation
tubing around the wires.

Ron,

The foam hot water insulation was the original method used by
Freedom. Needless to say, it does not last more than a few years.
Mine was piled up at the bottom of the mast when I pulled it.
I saw a post here, were people have used long tie wraps bigger than
the dia of the mast in a star pattern to center the wires. I have
not tried this myself. But, sounds like a neat easy solution. You
still have to pull the mast however.

Regards,

Van

How about making a 3 or 4 legged star using wire ties. Install them every 6 feet or so. It will look like an “X” when installed. The ends of the ties should bend when the stars are pulled into the mast. Do not trim the ties to ties exactly as they will ratchet and twist, pulling the cable up. I have used this on 3 freedoms with excellent success. The ties will not interfere with halyards.

I am an x-submariner both diesels and
nuclear! I can sleep upright in a chair, thought pounding seas, missile
launches, and also most a full depth charge run. So with this said I have not
heard anything clinking, or rubbing nor clanking on my F30 yet (I hope it does
not happen). Good set of ear plugs works wonders until you can get somewhere
to pull the mast (however beware of Ms Toyota’s fog horn however!)……

A simple cheap solution is to buy 15 foam sponges and tie the middle
of them every 4’ to a piece of light line and hoist the line plus
sponges into the mast.

Ron,

I would not recommend foaming it up in case you need to add more
wires or remove some. I did when I changed my wind instrutments
which recently broke and had to be looked at again.

But, I have solutions that does help with the noise:

  1. There is a hole forward and opposite of the boom on my mast, most
likely used to screw on bolts for the boom. I used that to to fish
out all the wires inside. Is lower than where the halyards exit so
it is perfect. Then I used wire ties to taper it tight on the mast
wall. it didnt remove the noise but has reduced it.
  2. My main halyard is used as a main topping lift even tho I have a
rigid boom vang. It wont bang against the mast and it helps settle
the boom so it does swing from side to side.
  3. got both jib and spinnaker halyards tight and out of the way and
the jib topping lift is stretch tight against the stress of the jib
    sheet.

Good luck,
-Nhat

Actually Nat, as I obviously didn’t make clear, I wasn’t going
to foam up the mast because of the internal halyards. I was considering running
foam (hw pipe) insulation tubing up the electronic wires. The halyards can be
made pretty tight I think. The mast is out right now so we will be able to
attack it from the bottom. I also need to check my radio antenna wires since
transmission isn’t good. External banging of halyards isn’t an issue of course
since they can be lead away.

What kind of rigid boom vang do you have and what do you use as
a downwind safety vang? F32 Hoyt – anybody else?
