RE: removing stupid mystery hull clear-coat (tech)

Fabulous B. Thanks! Another chunk of the mystery
filled in.

Maybe it hadna started ta flake off on ya, while she
was
yours. Talk about getting out right on time! And yes,
it is
flaking off a little yellowed. And a little
everywhere.

OK, so that’s great info. You are thinking SeaView had
helped maintain her for the FO (first owners). Great.
I’ll phone down there and see how long and how good
their memories may be. More later, as discovered.

It may have lasted a truly long time, but if any of
you Freedom
Fans out there anticipate being with your boat over 10
to 12 years, and if there isn’t any straightforward
way to “de-apply” this miracle never wax gunk, I’m
still not thinking it’s any bright step forward.

Just IMHO, but I’m growing grumpy about it… Jacqui

Jacqui,
it’ll be interesting to hear what you find out. Most finishes these
days are clear-coates as part of the application process, but clear-
coating as an ‘afterthought’ is possible too, I suppose. when it’s
done as part of a hull color change, generally the clear-coat is
chosen because it is chemically compatible with the color coat(s).
If polyurethane were applied over an awlgrip finish, it wouldn’t
surprise me in the least to see the PU eventually flake away -
Awlgrip recommends epoxy fillers over PU because PU fillers, resins,
etc have a tendency to shrink over time, much more so than epoxy.

Unfortunately, removing the old PU is most likely going to require
elbow-grease. It wouldn’t hurt to consult a reputable paint shop
though to see what other options your specific situation might have.
