Hi Bruce-
The cutless bearings (one in the through hull and one in the skeg) can be replaced once the shaft is pulled.
As for water to the forward end, if the slots are plugged it would block the lubrication.
Of course, you should replace both bearings and then you also will need to do an engine alignment - which will should also necessitate replacing the engine mounts. Good luck.
