I am considering getting this for my Freedom 32. Has
anyone used this rack. It looks very interesting as
you pull the dinghy over the hoops above the top rail
and the dinghy lies flat against the transom.

Dear Willie,

It is an edson product and you can search under the
name or you can see it at sailnet for 271 or defender
for 289. I went to defender on satureday, they have 5
on order. I think it will work but was hoping that
someone had installed them.

Bob

I’m also debating if I should install davits this year on my Freedom 35.
I’ve looked at the Edson dinghy stern rack, but I’m concerned about two
things. Depending on the size of the dinghy, what happens when you heel?
With the dinghy that close to the stern rail, where do you mount the rack
for the dinghy outboard?

Just some thoughts.

Yes these are real problems. The rack seems to be at
or above the top rail so the bottom of the dinghy rail
should be 2 or 3 feet above the waterline. I think
that it will work with a small dinghy. The other issue
is the motor, I dont know the answer. Maybe the dinghy
will be at a slight angle so that the motor can be
placed on a pad on the top rail, at one side of the
transom. As you can see the rack is only 14" high so
additional post will be needed on one side from the
unit to the toe rail to stabalize the rack. I hope
someone buys one before me so that all these problems
can be solved.

Thanks. Bob Frew “Free Spirit” Freedom 32 #18

I have been following this conversation with some interest, as I am trying to figure out a reasonable way to tow our dinghy without removing the motor. So…I went to the dinghy-tow site to check it out. Lo-and-behold, there is a picture of an F32 looking uncannily familiar. Upon further inspection, I realized it was our boat in its original configuration (Sequoyah), dragging its dinghy-tow (and dinghy) behind it! In digging through the pile of spare parts in my basement that I inherited with the boat four years ago, I have found the original dinghy-tow equipment that had been removed to allow for transom core repair prior to my purchase.

Although I had never met Bahama Bruce (we are the third owners), it’s nice to see our boat having such a good time in her youth. She is now enjoying a comfortable retirement easily cruising the Maine coast after 17 or so years of extended travel.

Now…do I reinstall the dinghy-tow?

Micahel, I see that the dink can be stored in the up
position “against the back stay”. But I did not think that Freedoms
had back stays. Our 35 does not. Does yours? It looks like a good
idea but what about heavy seas? We are considering getting our dink
WAY up high to avoid high seas? The idea of flipping it up against
the transom is intiguing.
