Re: the hull number

Where is the hull number on the freedom 32?

Thanks, Bob “Free Spirit”

Posted by Thomas Wales (twales@…>)

Hi Bob,

All boats are supposed to have numbers permanently affixed to the
transom. As you face the transom of your boat, there will be a series of
numbers and letters. This is the Hull Identification Number. It will
start with letters identifying the Manufacturer. Ours will say TPI. Then
there is the hull serial number, which is the actual hull number (mine is
20, hence hull #20). That is followed by the date (month and day) of
manufacture, which is a code and finally the year. The last 2 digits of my
HIN is 84 which is the year it was built.

On my 32, the bridge clearance is about 46’. The “P” measurement for our
mainsail is 39’. My spec sheet is on the boat. I downloaded the spec
sheet from the freedomgroup website under the “files” section. It’s about
20 pages or so, but very informative and necessary.

Finally, if your head in near the stern, I think it’s on the starboard
side, not the port side as the quarterberth is there, behind the
galley. The holding tank is under the starboard side lazarette and isn’t
very big. I don’t believe it wouldn’t be a significant issue to procure a
larger tank as there is quite a bit of room back there.

Good luck, and welcome to the family.

The hull numbers are a bit confusing. Yes, this is hull #18. However, Freedom did not make hull numbers 1, 3 ,5 ,7 ,9, and 13. They did this as a marketing tool to get into double digits quickly - the impression of a successful model. I can state that this was their practice beginning in 1985 with the Mull 36, but I can not state that they did this with earlier models. I owned the F36 #4 (now for sale in the midwest) and it was the second boat out of the factory. When you look at the original brochure for the F36 it shows the factory boat with the hull number 2 on the sails. It was the first boat out the doors. If this practice was used on the F32 in ‘84, then it would be the 12th hull built. Got to love the marketing folks! Dear Tom,

thank you I will take you up on that. We got rid of
our mortgage on our 43DS by selling it. It took me
about one week before I was looking for a boat that I
could afford. The Freedom 32 has always been a boat
that I admited for its design. I bought Free Spirit in
Florida for 45K in Oct 04. I sail out of Branford in
the spring and fall and mystic in the summer. I love
Block Island. If you are down this way I would love to
share stories about our boats.

thanks Again, Bob

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the welcome. You’re right. It is the starboard side. The
holding tank is right behind the head in the cockpit locker. There’s
alot of room in that locker as it is both long and deep. The trick, I
think will be finding large enough one with the correct dimensions to
get it thru the locker opening or through the opening in the back of
the wet locker.

This project isn’t a panic, but rather a problem that needs to be
solved before we go onto Lake Superior in 2007. We usually sail with 4
people, including ourselves. A 12 gallon holding tank is small when
we’re anchoring out over a 4 day weekend. Some of the responses I’ve
gotten suggest that the 12 gallon holding tank is actually more like
7-8 gallons. In that case, a larger one is even more important, but not
necessary for this summer.

Thanks again for your response.

On my 32, the bridge clearance is about 46’. The “P” measurement for
our
mainsail is 39’. My spec sheet is on the boat. I downloaded the spec

sheet from the freedomgroup website under the “files” section. It’s
about
20 pages or so, but very informative and necessary.

Finally, if your head in near the stern, I think it’s on the starboard
side, not the port side as the quarterberth is there, behind the
galley. The holding tank is under the starboard side lazarette and
isn’t
very big. I don’t believe it wouldn’t be a significant issue to
procure a
larger tank as there is quite a bit of room back there.

Good luck, and welcome to the family.

Interesting.

Out of curiosity, I checked the HIN on my '84 F32, to find out my hull # is
51. These people cranked out over 30 hulls in a year? I suspect there is
much more randomness in the numbering than we realize.

On another note, we are based in Harpswell, Maine. It will be nice to see
fellow Freedoms out there.

It will be spring sometime, right?

Hi Bob,
Looks like you have hull #18. Our boats are almost twins (mine is
#20 and also an '84). Hope you’re enjoying yours as much as we enjoy
ours. We’re based in Pemaquid, Maine and sail from Midcoast Maine up past
Frenchman’s Bay at Mount Desert (Bar Harbor area) which is spectacularly
beautiful in the summer. We visit many of the islands (including
Monhegan)
regularly. Let me know if you ever get up this way and I’ll buy you a
lobster.
Best,
TW

Apparently, there are variations in the way the HIN is built up. My
1981 Freedom 44 has the following HIN: TSPF4404M81J The sails have a
number 4, so I guess I’m hull # 4.

The manual for our F36/38 has a page devoted to HIN numbers. It says that boats molded before August 27, 1984 used one system and those after August 27, 1984 used another. The earlier system was:TSP for builder ID12 for model345 for hull numberM67 for model yearLetter for month of manufacture, with A for July 16-Aug 15 and proceeding to L for Jun 16-July 15.The more recent system (after Aug 27, 1984) follows the U.S. Coast Guard request:TSP for builder ID12 for model345 for hull #A6 for date of manufacture with A for January and proceeding to L for December78 for model year. Thus, I believe a hull of TSP36002A585 (the manual’s example) would be molded by Tillotson-Pearson as model 36 with hull # 002 on January 5, 1985. - ReesOn Mar 14, 2006, at 11:38 AM, Lorman, Alvin J. wrote: The Coast Guard has used a few different systems for creating the HIN. There’s a good article about HIN’s in the latest Good Old Boat, too.

The manual for our F36/38 has a page devoted to HIN numbers. It
says
that boats molded before August 27, 1984 used one system and
those
after August 27, 1984 used another. The earlier system was:

TSP for builder ID
12 for model
345 for hull number
M67 for model year
Letter for month of manufacture, with A for July 16-Aug 15 and
proceeding to L for Jun 16-July 15.

The more recent system (after Aug 27, 1984) follows the U.S.
Coast
Guard request:

TSP for builder ID
12 for model
345 for hull #
A6 for date of manufacture with A for January and proceeding to L
for
December
78 for model year.

Thus, I believe a hull of TSP36002A585 (the manual’s example)
would
be molded by Tillotson-Pearson as model 36 with hull # 002 on
January
5, 1985.

Apparently, there are variations in the way the HIN is built up. My
1981 Freedom 44 has the following HIN: TSPF4404M81J The sails have
a
number 4, so I guess I’m hull # 4.

Hi Bob,

All boats are supposed to have numbers permanently affixed to
the
transom. As you face the transom of your boat, there will be a
series of
numbers and letters. This is the Hull Identification Number.
It
will
start with letters identifying the Manufacturer. Ours will say
TPI. Then
there is the hull serial number, which is the actual hull number
(mine is
20, hence hull #20). That is followed by the date (month and
day)
of
manufacture, which is a code and finally the year. The last 2
digits of my
HIN is 84 which is the year it was built.

On my 32, the bridge clearance is about 46’. The “P”
measurement
for our
mainsail is 39’. My spec sheet is on the boat. I downloaded
the
spec
sheet from the freedomgroup website under the “files” section.
It’s about
20 pages or so, but very informative and necessary.

Finally, if your head in near the stern, I think it’s on the
starboard
side, not the port side as the quarterberth is there, behind the
galley. The holding tank is under the starboard side lazarette
and isn’t
very big. I don’t believe it wouldn’t be a significant issue to
procure a
larger tank as there is quite a bit of room back there.

Good luck, and welcome to the family.
