Re: Towing a dinghy vs towing an inflatable

Posted by michel.capel (michel.capel@…>)

Al,

Many suggestions done here were for towing inflatables or ribs.
Towing these is a drag, also litterally, and needs special
attention. Towing a hard dink that’s built for its purpose is a lot
easier. I have an 8’ Walker Bay and towed it across the North Sea
and back (120 NM crossing)without any problem. I’m installing an
automatic bailer now to get rid of spray and rain. A good dinghy for
towing has a long skeg (or two) to make it course-stable.

Also-tow it light.-the less weight in the dink, the better you can

I have a portabote, which I carry on a sailboard carrier ouside
the
life lines. You might want to check out “Dinghy Tow”
http://www.dinghy-tow.com/. No experience, but I’ve seen quite a
few. They have been installed on Freedoms and they have pictures

Thanks to all who provided advice on towing a dinghy. I have just returned from a four day cruise on the Chesapeake and I’m pleased to report that my dinghy, a Dyer Dhow, performed admirably, including gracefully navigating a thunderstorm with 30 knot winds. She rarely wandered and usually tracked better than I could helm.

Since I could not quickly find the tow rope I wanted, New England Rope’s water rescue rope, I bought a Worst Marine 60’ polypropylene tube tow rope with a breaking strength of 4100 lbs. It had eyes on both ends and I used a carabiner to attached one end to the bow eye and the other was cleated off on my midship cleat. The length of the tow rope at any given time was adjusted by tying off on the stern cleat.

Al,
I hope you have a screw carabiner. Non-screw carabiners are famous
for opening on unexpecting moments when they are not under constant
force. I always use two painters, one main and one spare that is a
little less tight than the other.
Michel
