Once you get this replaced, put a stopper (figure eight) knot on
each traveler line end. This will prevent two things:

  1. Preventing the traveler car from slamming down on the stops and
    ripping them off.

  2. Most important! Preventing the boom from hitting the mast at the
    gooseneck. Note that this also requires a stopper knot at the right
    location in the mainsheet. So with the traveler down and the
    mainsheet let out, nothing on the boom at the gooseneck should touch
    the mast. Leave a little bit of space as rope will stretch. You
    may think that you’re OK but then the massive force behind that
    accidental/uncontrolled gybe will make the boom touch. It is how
    the gooseneck gets ripped out of the mast.

Due to circumstances too stupid to relate, I find myself maybe having
to replace the traveller car on my boat. The car looks like what today
is the Harken 2753/54. Does anyone know what car is the best fit as a
replacement, or where I can get an exact replacement? Thanks.

If you need an older model Harken small boat traveler car, go quickly
to ebay, under “sailing hardware & gear”; then search “Harken”; and
you’ll find two older model small boat traveler cars–a #158, and #171.
The listings end in less than 24 hours. Also a company named C G
Edwards has a web page showing many Harken small boat, older model,

A 172 sounds correct as original equipment. Harken still listed them
in the 2001 catalog. However, it appears that they have been
superseded by a newer product.

So it looks like the 2754 is the closest replacement. Just make sure
that it matches the track.

Hi John. Do you suppose the Harken 171 will do the trick? Is it too light-duty? There’s one on e-bay for a very low price, but I’m not sure–on a weekend with no one to ask–whether it’s quite right. It looks right. I used your name as a reference to join the local chapter of the US Power Squadron, and it appears they have accepted my application so–thanks. I’m replacing traveler lines, and the main sheet line this winter along with continued electronic work. I am also getting a new main sail from Haarstick in February, as my main was literally falling apart. Obviously I have decided against the Tartan 30. Later for now. Peter,

The only difference between the 171 and 172 is the “Safe working
load” (SWL). SWL of 171 = 500 pounds, 172 = 850 pounds. The
breaking strength is the same (2500 pounds).

The key difference is the type of balls used. Low Load = Delrin
(white), High Load are Torlon (yellow).

I’d say, for the short money to go for it. You can always replace
the Delrin balls with Torlon ones. Easy enough to do as I replaced
a bunch of mine (after I lost them!).

PYhacht.com, they charged $89 and were very helpful. I hope
your “stupid circumstances” one day will become part of common

F-21 original (blue) traveler car is Harken har172. Harken said there
is no replacement part, however they still make the har172. They have
2 in stock as of 1-30-2008. (262-691-3320)

Pyacht.com (877-379-22480) said they can order har172, $84.78, 7 – 10
days to get them. Others can order from Harken for you.

John’s message of 1-27-2008 re har 172 and har171 is correct and the
part number of ball bearing replacements are found at:
