Hi,I’m a new member. I own a Tanzer 7.5 (Sloop). Frankly, the ease of
sailing a Cat boat sounds too good to be true.
I subscribed because I’m considering a Cat Ketch, and wanted to learm more
about Freedoms.
I have two questions for now. If any of you have time to weigh in on your
opinion of the rig, or the Freedom boats, pro and con, etc, that would be
appreciated, too.

I read of the CF mast failure recently posted. Is this a common
problem with cat rigs or Freedoms?
-
Would you consider a Freedom 36 a Bluewater boat?
Thanks,
Jim Bridgens

Jim,
I’m also a new member. I own a 39PHS. It can
definitely be a bluewater boat. The ONLY downside to
my rig is that I can’t sail as close to the wind. I
can still get from point A to point B quicker, and
from 50 degrees and up the Freedom is unbeatable.

I second Kirk’s evaluation. My F40 consistently does 6 - 8 knots from
a close reach down to broad reach. I don’t think I’ve been on a boat
with a more forgiving motion through any kind of sea, even a
following quartering sea. The only time I’ve been less than impressed
was motoring down the Delaware river into 25 kts of headwind and a
steep head-on sea. It required “tacking” back and forth across the
river to keep the waves on the quarter bow.
As far as tacking, I typically lose about 1 1/2 knots (more in choppy
seas) going from one tack to the other, mainly because since there’s
no jib, the main flops around uselessly and does nothing to pull the
bow through the wind. However, in terms of the ease of sailing, it’s
hard to beat a cat ketch. happy sailing!

Hello Jim and family. I am a somewhat new member.
Bought a great Freedom 36/38 (38 means has a two foot
swim step or “sugar scoop” extension on an otherwise
identical 36) a year ago. Began enjoying this list a
couple months ago. Several Freedoms have
circumnavigated, including one list member who did so
in a 32. He reports going under and around in a
hurricane, and the boat righting with its mast intact.
Some certification. At one time the yard, TPI, used to
guarantee the mast for life to the first owner(s). The
recent reports of CF mast failures are new to me, I am
reading them with interest. More to follow, no doubt.
Several 36/38’s have circumnavigated, too. Have heard
one owner wrote a book about it, don’t know the name
of the book, though. My boat had entries in one of its
logs for Honolulu, San Francisco, and Halifax. That
geography is still confounding me. All the best, we
love our Freedoms, hope you may, too. Jacqui
