I mentioned, in a posting last month, that my club is hosting the Mutineer Class Nationals in October of 2009. I have been thinking lately, it would be great to get together with other Fredom owners for food, fun and sailing. Is anyone interested?
The State of Alabama has a great lodge and park on TVA’s Lake Guntersville, here in North Alabama. There are adequate slips for about 16 to 20 Freedoms at the park dack ajacent to the campground and the rooms at the lodge are very nice too.
If enough of you have an interest I will speek to my club (Browns Creek Sailing Association) about sponsoring the events. Beyond food, sailing and fun we could even invite sailmakers and other venders to exhibet there goods.
Summer is the dulldrums here but the fall/winter winds provide nice sailing. How does the week after Thanksgiving 2009 sound? If you don’t like Alabama or December I am willing to travel to a Freedom Rendezvous elsewhere if someone else volenteers to organize it.
Sound off! Let’s talk about it. If you want me to take lead on this we need to make a decision soon as space at the Lake Guntersville Lodge books up about a year in advance.

A rendezvous is an excellent idea and something I support and would love to be part of. Clearly the challenge is getting boats and boaters together in one place. For instance, from my home port in CT I could see cruising a day or 2 in any direction but I would still be in Long Island Sound. A Freedom 21 get together without a bunch of boats doesn’t interest me as much as being able to compare and contrast what different owners have done to their craft.

Regional get togethers may be the way to go if racing/cruising is the
goal. I can see where NE boats and West Coast boats might not be
able to get to the Tennessee Valley even on a trailer with the price
of fuel between $3.50 and $4.00 a gallon. One of the reasons I
suggested Lake Guntersville (besides it being my home water) is that
it is only a day’s drive from the Great Lakes area, the Gulf Coast
and the Georgia/Carolinas coasts.

I’d love to attend a “get-together” that involved sailing to the
destination. It would take me about 5-6 days to get to “Liberty
Island” based on my last two years experiences. That’s a problem
what with having to support my family. I could get to about Duxbury
and back in 4 days–including some getting together time. South
shore anybody?

Well, the pole results are in. Based on the 9 of us that answered, I
will NOT be setting up a regata on Lake Guntersville for next
fall/winter.

Clark,
Don’t feel bad about the low response to your poll. What you may be
experiencing is the way that most people use the Freedom 21
discussion. You may not know that very few people actually visit
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freedom21/. Nearly everyone receives
email posts and replies to them without ever visiting the discussion
Web page. Additionally, not many in the group are aware of the
Freedom 21 Web site at http://www.freedom21.info. Each of these
resources is different. Members have to actively go to the discussion
Web page and the Freedom 21 Web site. The messages arrive by email
through a passive process.
The freedom 21 discussion Web page has sections containing photos,
links, database, polls, a member listing. I doubt if many members
have explored this information. However, by mentioning it here, they
may. If they do explore the Web page, they will be able to find the
poll section easier the next time a poll is initiated. My guess is
that few in the group realize that they can post photos of their boats
in the photo section. Some members have posted photos already.
We also haven’t seen links posted to Youtube.com videos of member
boats under sail. That will change over time.
A while ago, I considered setting up a Freedom 21 Wiki. Although such
a Wiki would greatly benefit the group if everyone participated, there
was not much interest. The lack of interest was not a lack of
interest in having such a resource available. The problem was that
few in the group knew what a Wiki was or how they would contribute to
a Wiki.
One of the lessons I have learned while helping companies set up
social intranets is that you can’t force employees to participate in
technologies for which they have little knowledge or interest. What
works best is seduction.
Your willingness to arrange a regatta is much appreciated by everyone
in the group. Your setting up a poll demonstrates your technical
skills. That is also appreciated.

users to find us when they first :google: the freedom 21. Just my 2
