Repairing Mast scrapes

Posted by gjirak (gjirak@…>)

I have a Freedom 38 and the carbon fiber mast has a few deep scrapes
in the lower third of the mast. Has anyone repaired these superficial
blemishes. If so, what do you use. Do you fill with matched
gelcoat? What paint is compatible? If you use paint, what should I
use to fill?

Thanks for your help,

George Jirak

How deep is deep ? If more than 2mm I would include epoxy & fiber in the repair. Othewise use a filler such as Marine Tex.gjirak <gjirak@…> wrote: I have a Freedom 38 and the carbon fiber mast has a few deep scrapes in the lower third of the mast. I have found Appliance Enamel spray paint to work. It is whiter than the original color but close and does provide the protection. This was recommended to me by Freedom before they closed up.

My two carbon fiber masts were damaged by an overhead powerline during
Katrina. Thet were heavily scratched and sawn in in several spots.
They were repaired with layers of carbon and epoxy, then locally
covered in glass and epoxy. Filling, fairing and coating was done with
Awlgrip products.

You could ask Goetz Marine Technology to advise you; they built a new
mast for my F44 six years ago. This mast has a better design and layup
then the original TPI masts from 1981.

Good luck,
Michel
