I’m looking at a 1984 F21 in Jacksonville. The spinnaker is missing
and it doesn’t look like it was ever rigged for a jib. I would
appreciate any information anyone can offer about replacing the
spinnaker, rigging a forestay and finding a jib as well as any buyer’s
tips, hazzards to look for etc. I’m also wondering about rigging a
trailer for short transports.
The current owner has had the boat sitting in the water for three years
and has taken two sailing lessons on her. That has been the sole
extent of the boats recent use. She looks generally sound but terribly
neglected.
I’m excited about the possability of becoming an F21 owner but need to
get an idea what it’s going to cost me post purchase to get this old
girl up to her full potential.

On our CF mast F21, we don’t need a forestay, the staysail (jib) has a forestay built in. When you hoist the staysail, the halyard pulls the head of the sail, and the tack is attached at the top of the gunmount. When the staysail is not there, you don’t need the forestay.
We just paid about 1k for a brandy new spinnaker with the dousing sleeve that lies on the port side deck. According to the manual, you only use the staysail in winds under 8kts. The boat has great power under mainsail alone.

These are scans of my original documentation. You’ll see two (2)
different staysails listed in my notes. A “class” (overlapping)
staysail and a not frequently mentioned “blade” (non-overlapping)
staysail. Note that because of the very short “J” measurement on a
Freedom 21 you cannot really use traditional sloop overlapping
percentages (e.g., 135%, 150%, etc.) to express the amount of sail.
Both are done with a “rope” (i.e., wire) luff which takes the place
of a forestay.
Yes, the “class” staysail, which I had, will be way too much at 10
knots of wind or above. However, it is great for light air.

I blew out my staysail and didn’t want to spend big bucks for a new one. I went online to baconsails.com and checked the luff dimention. A lightning jib now is my jib. I bought a used one from a local Lightning sailor for 150 bucks. It has a wire luff. The only drawback is the 2 battens,you have to roll it up to bag it. If you can get a staysail, they just get stuffed in a bag.Make sure you have very good haylyards. You winch all your sails and they have to be in good condition.Check all the previous messages to get an idea of the problems other people are finding with used Freedom 21’s.Welcome aboard!
