Hi All,I may be replacing all the running rigging and blocks/sheeves on my Freedom Hoyt 32. Are there any recommendations on vendors and/or tips or warnings before I start the process of purchasing and installing?
I am also going to be trying to clean some lines before I replace them, for instance the mainsheet. What do people recommend for a messenger lines when taking out the mainsheet for cleaning? Thanks!–Kevin

Kevin:
Garhauer
blocks are the best value in the entire boating industry. www.garhauermarine.com
I’ve
used www.riggingonly.com several times
for running rigging and have been pleased with the prices and the service.

I totally, completely agree.
They are not only cheaper, they are BETTER (At least in Florida, the
sun eats up anything made of plastic. The stainless Garhauer blocks
with aluminum sheaves are pretty much permanant.)

two cautionary notes.
The first is about the garhauer blocks. This may have changed since
the garhauers on Bright Star were made, but there is a potential weak
point in their design. The blocks themselves are quite well made, but
the pivot pin to take the shackle may be undersized in some
applications. The guy who does most of my rigging has seen the pin
explode on some of the older blocks. Looking at their website now, it
looks like that pin may be beefier now, so may not be much of a
problem any more.
The other caution is about cleaning your lines. You probably already
know this, but if you use bleach, even diluted, there is a good
chance you’ll destroy the integrity of the line. My dad bought an
anchor rode from a marine consignment shop that, unbeknownst to my
dad, had been returned to its pristine white color by the PO by
soaking the line in bleach and water. Needless to say, the first time
he used it, the line parted with the loss of anchor and chain.
As far as what do use for a messenger, you can use pretty much any
small stuff. most riggers use line that looks no thicker than twine,
partly because it can be sewn and wrapped to a larger line without
interfering with sheaves and exit blocks.
These are just my 2cts.
