Replacing Shaft Seal - burping?

Posted by Jeff Chale (jwchale@…>)
I am replacing the Syntron shaft seal on my F-30 and had read in a prior email about burping the seal, I presume to get air out of it so water is present for cooling. Can anyone provide me the “how to burp” directions?

Thanks,

Jeff,
just slide the bellows toward the stern. a gushload of water will
come in, splashing into the boat (but more importantly, filling the
boot). Release the bellows. Voila, burped.

Jeff and Lance,
on my F30 there are no bellows, the seal fits into a piece of rubber
hose. It has to be burped by loosening a nut at the top of the brass
fitting, letting enough water out that there is no air left, and
retightening.

There are two bolts on the metal donut ring surrounding the shaft, each
having an allen head fitting. Loosen one bolt at a time. You do not
need to remove the bolt (avoid dropping in bilge, etc). Upon loosening,
you will hear the escaping air and eventually just water will trickle
out. Re-tighten bolt and repeat for the second bolt. The hole procedure
is a lot like bleeding a brake line. Not difficult.

You can also install a zerk in the 1/8"? hole where the plug is and just push the ball in at the end of the zerk until water drips out. In commercial applications a hose delivering 5 psi of water cools the bearing. In case of extreme failure I’ve been told you could install grease in the zerk to limp back in. (Do not ever put grease into the zerk for lubrication!)
Most of the time I will bleed the zerk after I’ve been sailing in heavy wind, as air will slip back in.
The zerk information was supplied to me by an engineer /VP at the manufacturer.
Paul Dennis mentioned there was no need to bleed, I believe, as the heat will automatically suck water in before any damage can be done.
Someone out there surely has the scientific way to explain it a little more eloquently!-
Just a thought, been doing so for 8 years (Possibly without the need)

Jeff,

Could you describe how you obtained your replacement
seal? Was it custom ordered from TMC or do they still
produce the seal as part of their standard line?

You might want to check with PYI, Inc. Their price for a dripless shaft seal for a 1" shaft is around $250.00
