Cruised my Freedom 30 from the California Delta to Monterey. Faced
unusual southerly winds at 20Kts on the way down and am now in Santa
Cruz waiting out a gail warning 30 to 35Kt northwesterlies !!! aargh.
Gave sailing from SC to Half Moon Bay a shot yesterday. While the boat
performed well, just could not bear the pounding in 30Kts of wind with
four feet of wind wave on top of 7 feet of swell. She had her bow
completely under water a few times, felt like a volvo racer. I am
singlehanding so decided discretion was the better part of valor and
beat a retreat back to sunny warm and relatively calm Santa Cruz.
Took another shot at it at about 9:00 PM last night figuring that the
wind would moderate. It moderated to about 25Kts didn’t want to deal
with that at night alone so beat the second retreat of the day. I want
to sally forth once again but the gail warning has kept me at bay thus
far. Supposed to moderate tomorrow so we’ll see.
Having said that I’m having a pleasant down day anchored just north of
the Santa Cruz pier and relly enjoying the electrical upgrade I
installed a few months back. No worries regarding the laptop and my
other gadgets.
