Filters can be cross-referenced on the wix filters website www.wixfilters.com this is where napa source some of their filter, this website will also cross-refer racor filter elements. Yanmar use a variant of the Racor 200 series filter as a primary filter offering. The Racor 200 series offers the correct flow rates for smaller diesels as used in freedoms but also has disadvantages. The larger Racor 500FG or the 500MA (marine version with a metal heat shield) is a 3 stage filter.

Stage One: Separation - As fuel enters the filter assembly, it moves through the centrifuge and spins off large solids and water droplets which fall to the bottom of the collection bowl.
Stage Two: Coalescing - Small water droplets bead-up on the surface of the conical baffle and cartridge element. When heavy enough, they too fall to the bottom of the bowl.
Stage Three: Filtration - Proprietary Aquabloc®II cartridge elements repel water and remove contaminants from fuel down to 2 micron (nominal). They are waterproof andeffective longer then water absorbing elements.
Now the 500 series filters are bigger than our engines need and the fuel flow may not be sufficient to make full use of the advantages of the filter, but they ‘Top Loading’ which means that the possibility of spilling diesel in the bilge is much reduced and replacing a filter at sea is far easier, particularly if you have picked up a batch of bad fuel, which happens more often than you would believe, and have to change a filter several times before reaching a destination.
Note: I have no commercial interest in Racal-Parker but do recommend their products, the description of the processing stages is copied verbatim from Racor literature.

Lola:

The
standard filter on the 1987 F30 was a Fram. You cannot use a Racor filter
in the Fram housing. You’ll need to buy an entirely new unit –
filter and housing. I installed a series 200 Racor; they run between $80
and $120 dollars; replacement cartridges run about $20-30.

Right.

The filters are particular within each brand. And even different models of the
same brand.

I replaced the entire filter unit with a Racor 500FG.

It cost around $180, but the filters are only about $8 each. And it is much
easier to change than all the other filter systems I’ve used on mine and other
boats.

NAPA sells filter elements for Racor, Fram and many other filter system brands.

You have to tell them the filter model.

I
could not fit a Racor 500, no less a 500 with the T handle vacuum gauge, in the
engine compartment of an F30. There isn’t enough vertical clearance.

I have the RACOR unit 500MA and it has worked to perfection. Knock on wood but I have not had a dirty fuel issue yet using this filter and a fuel funnel filter. And yes there has been water in the fuel but the filter has separated and I just drain it off. I would like to get another but that is a lot of lunch money to save, so I can switch off when needed without an interruption in fuel delivery. However as suggested below I am investing in a vaccum guage which screws into the T handle hole and as someone else suggested maybe the fuel bulb (as on outboard engine gas lines) would work nicely for a primer pump.BobOn Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 11:19 AM, george huffman wrote:They also make a “T” handle replacement that incorporates a vacuum gauge. The original Racor 12 S was a lot smaller. There wasn’t enough vertical
clearance to mount the Racor 500 on mine either, so I moved it to another

vacuum gauge.
Expensive but effective and easily installed. A good filtering system
should incorporate a vacuum gauge and an easy method of priming (in my
opinion).

Right.

The filters are particular within each brand. And even different models of
the same brand.

I replaced the entire filter unit with a Racor 500FG.

It cost around $180, but the filters are only about $8 each. And it is
much
easier to change than all the other filter systems I’ve used on mine and
other boats.

The standard filter on the 1987 F30 was a Fram. You cannot use a
Racor
filter in the Fram housing. You’ll need to buy an entirely new unit -
filter and housing. I installed a series 200 Racor; they run between
$80
and $120 dollars; replacement cartridges run about $20-30.
