An interesting evening sitting in the cockpit of my Freedom 35, I
looked at the compass and the dial was laying on its side. Since we
were at the dock and the boat wasn’t healing, I realized we had a
problem. To make matters worse, the oil leaked down into our matress
in the aft cabin. I’ve never had a situation where the oil leaked out
of a compass without any provication.
Has anyone had this problem? I’m assuming it can be repaired, but a
quick look before it got dark didn’t even make it clear how to remove
the compass from the binnacle. I’ll need to take another look in the
light of day.
Any help or experience would be appreciated.

Most Ritchie compasses are fixable. Most Danforths are not. Ritchie has a
repair facility,or some regions have a compass repairer.

From FAQ at Ritchie compass:
What type of fluid is in my Ritchie Magnetic Compass?
Until 2001, all Ritchie compasses (see exception) were
filled with odorless mineral spirits. Ritchie now uses
a fluid called Isopar L ® that has similar properties
but with some added benefits over Odorless Mineral
Spirits. These can be mixed together.
Exception: Some old style Flat Top Compasses used an
Isopropyl Alcohol and water mix. This process was
stopped in the 1960’s. If you have a Flat Top Compass
it is recommended that you test the fluid to see if it
is odorless mineral spirits or Isopropyl Alcohol.
(me writing again)
When a bubble developed in my Ritchie a few years ago
I pulled the compass, took it home, bought some
oderless mineral spirit (my compass is definately pre
2001 mfg.) at Ace Hardware and refilled the compass
via a small port at the bottom of the compass. Been
perfect ever since. Never could figure out where the
original fluid went. No apparent leakage from the
compass…go figure.

As I recall, remove the two screws holding the light fixture in place then
the metal ring can be removed or screws holding down it can be accessed.
You will need to disconnect the light. I also found Ritche to be very
supportive and informative when I called them.
Never had the oil leak however the compass is refillable so there must be
a refill port of some sort.

Thanks Fred
That’s what I remembered when I installed these compasses years ago and its
exactly right. It seems the original installer was a bit of a silicone
sealer fanatic. He sealed the compass to the stainless cover and the cover
to the pedestal. When I finally pried the stainless cover off the pedestal,
the compass came with it. Try as I might, I can’t find any way short of
dynamite to separate the compass from the stainless. When you look up
inside, all you see is the sealer oozing out around the edge of the compass.
I can replace the SP-5 for just under $500 or, given my wife’s new found
aversion to compass oil in her mattress, I’m looking at replacing it with an
Azimuth electronic compass.

That’s certainly a consideration Lance, but with three independent GPS
systems and two independent digital compasses on board and a hand held
bearing analog compass. You’ve got to ask how much redundancy is enough.
Keep in mind, it was the analog compass that failed without warning.

Jay,
the KVM Azimuth compass is recommended for motorboats only; It’s not
suitable for boats that heel, they say in the brochure.
I’ve looked at it when my Plastimo binnacle compas went. The KVH also
needs power, so if your batteries are down and all your nav equipment
goes dead, so goes your compass! I would always keep a magnetic
compass on board in addition to my electronic nav aids.

I had a Navico electronic compass in my last boat, a narrow beamed sloop which
sailed on its ear in anything more than 10 knots of wind, and it worked a treat.
It was
specifically designed for sail, but the brand has been taken over by Simrad (I
think),
so they may not be available any longer.

Just my opinion, but I don’t think I’d feel comfortable cruising
without an analog compass. Electronics are great, but
electronics
fail.

Thanks everyone who responded to my compass problem. As you
can
see from my
response to Fred, I’m looking at options. If anyone has had
experience with
the Azimuth compass from KVH please let me know.

An interesting evening sitting in the cockpit of my
Freedom 35, I
looked at the compass and the dial was laying on its
side. Since we
were at the dock and the boat wasn’t healing, I
realized we had a
problem. To make matters worse, the oil leaked down
into our matress
in the aft cabin. I’ve never had a situation where
the oil leaked out
of a compass without any provication.
Has anyone had this problem? I’m assuming it can be
repaired, but a
quick look before it got dark didn’t even make it
clear how to remove
the compass from the binnacle. I’ll need to take
another look in the
light of day.
Any help or experience would be appreciated.
