I’m reasonably sure that the original
locked with handle in down position. I have the same clutches on my
Quickstep 24 as I had on my F21.
I cannot imagine anyone ever designing a
rope clutch where locked position would be up – where it could snag a
lazy mainsheet on tack or gybe.
One of the nice feature of these clutches
is that you can haul in on the line while the clutch is engaged – allows you
to tighten the halyard without having to open clutch first.

The line clutches on my Freedom 21 (hull 234) lock in the up position. I
think this can be changed by moving the mounting pin from the “A” to the
“B” hole on the handle.

I thought I was nut’s. I was rigging the lazy jacks and had the boom lifted using the main halyard held by the clutch. Something hit the clutch handle and it released the boom on top of my wrist and hand. Luckily I just got a bad bruise and cut’s. I’m changing the position tommorow. I started to play with the cluthces. A fellow sailor suggested I spray the clutch’s with silicon, all of a sudden the clutch would lock/close in the down position. Try that on your clutch’s. I did not mess with the handle…Thanks to all for the input David Garrison <sierrasmith71@…> wrote: The line clutches on my Freedom 21 (hull 234) lock in the up position. How did you keep the silicone (spray?) from getting on ropes? Did you remove them first? I have gotten used to my handles always being about 30 degrees up when “locked” - what would G. Hoyt say?
