Rudder Pins

Hi All - welcome to Fall Sailing! Last week I had to remove Emmylou’s rudder
after
grounding her on an oyster bed (low tide). While doing so I lost one of the pins
overboard.
Any ideas on how/where to get spares? Make your own?

Hi Sean,

Top Cat came with long bolts and nuts that were corroded when I took
ownership. So, I took them to a hardware store and found them
available in two kinds of metals.

I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that these were not original
equipment, but they work find.

Rudder Pins are “Schaefer Heavy duty Gudgeon Pins, SCHAE#81-49”.
WEST Marine Model 252239, $28.99, Page 902 of 2006 Catalog.

Top pin goes up through the gudgeon with round cotter ring on top.

Bottom pin gose downward through the gudgeon with round cotter ring
on the bottom

You will have to cut it down, the original gudgeons accept a .490 Dia
pin and these are .500 Dia.
Any shop with a lathe will do, I had mine cut at Bell-Pat Marine in
Patchogue, N.Y. for $5.00. I lost mine on WAHOO’s maiden voyage two
years ago. Nothing like the sound of 1/2 lb.of stainless dropping
onto the lower gudgeon and off into the Great South Bay.

I had to replace my pintle as well on my 1984
F21 (back when I owned one). I used the pintle from West Marine and, as Nick
noted by reference to Andrew Covati’s email, they are ever so slightly
larger.

You will either have to do as Andrew did –
bring the pin to a machine shop and have them reduce the diameter by about .01
inch - or replace both the gudgeon and pintle with a matched set.

At some point, you should carefully check
the integrity of your gudgeons for cracks.
