Running Radar Cable

Posted by Jay Glen (svfantasy@…>)

I’m getting ready to install a new Raymarine radome on my carbon fiber
mast. I’m replacing the existing Furuno radome. It appears the radar
cable is bundled with all other mast wiring, so I’m going to fish the
new radar cable seperate from this bundle. At the bottom of the mizzen
mast is a hole approximately 1.5" in diameter, where all mast wiring
exits. There is not enough room for the new cable. Considering there
is no mast compression on an unstayed mast, can I cut another hole for
this new radar cable? It would make fishing the new cable easier, but
I do not want to weaken the mast base by drilling this new hole. Your
comments would be appreciated.

Jay,

If there is a radar cable now, then there should be room for the new
cable as well, isn’t it? If you ducttape the head of the new cable
to the head of the old one, can’t you pull the new cabel in? I would
be hesitant to drill a large hole in the mast base. There are no
compression loads on the mast, but there is a bending moment.
good luck,
michel

Michel,
Thank you for your response. Because the existing radar cable is bundled (tied) to the other mast wiring I cannot remove it without without pulling the mast and seperating the bundle of wires. Therefore, I was going to run the new radar cable seperate from the bundle. Although I will be leaving the original cable in place, I can push each end into the existing holes to get the ends out of the way. I may be able to fish the new cable through the existing holes, but because the existing cable bundle is so tight fitting I thought it would be easier to just use a new hole right above the mast step.

Jay,
On my F33 I had no holes in the masts at all; the wiring just went
down through a hole in the mast base and up again through another
hole (outside the mast) in the mast base. Perhaps that’s an idea you
can work with for the new radar cable.
