Seized "Y" valve

Posted by ABC (oldbrochan@…>)
The “Y” valve on the toilet system on my F32 (Mull) appears to have seized, fortunately in the ‘Overboard’ position. Has anyone any similar experience and if “yes” how did you access the valve and then remove it for repair and/or replacement? It has been suggested to me by a marine sanitation company, that the valve may simply be seized and that removing the valve and soaking it in vinegar may solve this problem. Any help/assistance gratefully received. David F32#124

The Y valve of my Mull 30 seized when part of the handle stem broke off in it. I can’t get the broken piece out, but I haven’t exhausted all possibilities since it is seized in the position that directs waste to the holding tank, which is the only legal position inshore anyhow.

As to access, if your 32 is like my 30, the valve can be accessed in two ways. If you remove the toilet paper holder, you can reach most of the valve. From the door under the sink, I can just barely reach the valve. There are a few screws on the outside of the cabinet that affix the valve to the cabinet. Remove those and then remove the hoses by borrowing some long arms and going in via the under sink door.

Good luck.

P.S. None of this may work if you have a Hoyt 32, which, from your boat’s number, may be the case.

I am curious what the main differences are between the Mull and Hoyt

The Mull 32 is a Mull 30 with a 2’ sugar scoop added to the stern. The Hoyt 32 is a totally different boat, although both share essentially the same type of rigging. The Mull boats are pretty traditional-looking inside and out for a mid-1980’s boat. The Hoyt boats are a bit older and have a more eccentric design. I probably shouldn’t say this, but I’m told that the Hoyt boats sail better.

The Y valve on my '87 Mull 28 had a locking ring that prevented the
handle from rotating. This ring served to keep the valve in the
holding tank position. Before assuming that the valve is seized,
check it for the ring. Checking requires removal of the valve from
its mounting wall as per Al’s directions. Herm, F28 Impulse

The “Y” valve on my Hoyt32 was located above the head unit, on the aft head bulkhead. I do not know if this is/was typical. After fighting with it (the Y valve) for over a year, I removed it and completely re-plumbed the head-to-holding tank system. On my Hoyt (again I don’t know if this is typical) the base of the holding tank is well above the waterline. This enabled me too dispense with the ridiculous “Rube Goldgerg” system that was in place (I hope TPI didn’t do it) and install a simple system that goes from the head directly into the holding tank. To empty the holding tank I simply open the dump seacock (where legal) and the tank drains in about 15 seconds. I also still have the option to dump shoreside via the deck fitting. I know this sounds too good to be true, but it has worked perfectly for the two years that I’ve had it installed, and the beauty of it is that it dispenses with trickery such as Y
valves (which seem to have a failure rate of about 1000%) and pumps. By the way, I installed a nice Marinco stainless waterproof 120v outlet in the hole left by the Y valve. Needed one in the head anyway (win win). Did any of you guys add a larger holding tank? We’ve got a 32 on the
Mississippi river and can’t dump overboard ever. A 12 gallon tank isn’t
large enough for 4 people for a week. We’re studying options but
haven’t found a solution yet.

I didn’t install a larger holding tank because we don’t need to as we sail
offshore in Maine regularly. There should be plenty of room to retrofit a
bigger tank down there. There is a guy in Maine here that “welds” plastic
and can custom make a tank for you to fit the space. I’m sure you could
find someone near the Mississippi who could do the same for you if you
can’t find a stock tank to fit. Saltwater sailing is simpler in this regard.
Good luck,
TW

found a solution yet.

The “Y” valve on my Hoyt32 was located above the head unit, on the aft
head bulkhead. I do not know if this is/was typical. After fighting with
it (the Y valve) for over a year, I removed it and completely re-plumbed
the head-to-holding tank system.

On my Hoyt (again I don’t know if this is typical) the base of the
holding tank is well above the waterline. This enabled me too dispense
with the ridiculous “Rube Goldgerg” system that was in place (I hope TPI
didn’t do it) and install a simple system that goes from the head
directly into the holding tank. To empty the holding tank I simply open
the dump seacock (where legal) and the tank drains in about 15 seconds.
I also still have the option to dump shoreside via the deck fitting.

I know this sounds too good to be true, but it has worked perfectly for
the two years that I’ve had it installed, and the beauty of it is that
it dispenses with trickery such as Y valves (which seem to have a
failure rate of about 1000%) and pumps.

By the way, I installed a nice Marinco stainless waterproof 120v outlet
in the hole left by the Y valve. Needed one in the head anyway (win win).

If you need more info, let me know…

Has anyone any similar experience and if “yes” how did you access the
valve and then remove it for repair and/or replacement?

It has been suggested to me by a marine sanitation company, that the
valve may simply be seized and that removing the valve and soaking it
in vinegar may solve this problem.

Any help/assistance gratefully received.
