Shaft Removal on F-36

Posted by sailsurv (sailsurv@…>)

I am replacing the prop shaft, cutlass bearing and rebuilding the
Max Prop. The shaft reassembly however looks very close to the rudder
(shoal draft rudder).
Has anyone replacing the shaft had trouble with the rudder being in
the way.
I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Bad new is you have to drop the rudder. Good news is you can now
inspect your rudder bearings. If you only want to replace the
cutless bearing, it can be removed with a special tool without
removing the shaft.

Before you drop the rudder, see if the shaft will pass by. On the 36 I sold last year, the shaft could be removed without dropping the rudder. Try some hand soap like Goop to lubricate the shaft past the cutlass and be careful not to put too much pressure on the strut if the clearances are too tight. I could see, that on some boats it will clear and other, not do to the alignment differences on each boat.

Good luck.

Put the helm over hard to one side. Often the shaft will be able to be slid
past. If not, enjoy ,it is BOAT WORK. Better than house work.
