Shaft Seal on F36/38

Posted by anndrury1 (ann@…>)

Hello: I have a Freedom 36/38 with a shaft seal problem. I have had
two different types of dripless seals-one was cooled with hydraulic
oil dripping on the seal at a very slow rate, the other was cooled
with water (Last Drop) from the line feeding into the exhaust mixing
elbow. Both of these systems failed in short order. We also needed
to replace the shaft (due to scoring) each time. I have been trying
to find info on the feasibility of using the old fashion stuffing
box. All I can find out is there is not enough room to re-pack
without hauling the boat.
Could any 36 or 38 owners enlighten me on this topic? Also heard you
can get the coupler(s) shortened by special order which would give an
extra .5 to .75 inch between the transmission and shaft log.

I was able to install a PSS Shaft Seal in my F36. I used the high
speed seal with the water feed line which is supposed to be connected
to the raw water feed. Instead of plumbing it as instructed, I just
left the water feed line unconnected in a high loop to the top of the
engine box where it acts as a vent. 4 years now with no problems.
Contact me off board if you wish for photos and details.

This is very interesting, as I had, and have LasDrop shaft seal(s) on my present Hoyt32 (since at least 1998), and my previous boat of which I put more than 2400 hrs on the engine (and LasDrop). I have had ZERO problems with either unit. Just “burp” them when you put them back in the water. By the way, neither are injection cooled.
I wonder why you had such a problem?
