I have wanted a larger, newer style anchor for our future travels.
Our 45 pound CQR has been great, but hasn’t been tested much over 45
knots, and there is a good chance that at some point in time we will
find some nastier weather.
So I found a great deal on a Delta and ended up with an 88 pounder (40
Kilos). I have just test fitted it, and it fits, just. So another bit
of info for other Freedom owners.

Its on my F39 Express. I’ll be heading for the South Pacific next
year and want to make sure my ground tackle is adequate.

I hope your windlass is adequate, as well! By the time you have let out 15-20
metres of
chain as well, there will be some serious lifting to be done.
I envy you the South Pacific anchorages, though.

Hey Marno! Good on you. I wasn’t able to get the picture link to
work in your post but I gleaned enough information from it to find
your website. You guys rock! I hope Kerri and I will catch up to you
out there somewhere. We are also going for overkill on the ground
tackle. We have a venerable old Ideal Windlass that can handle the
3/8th chain and hefty anchor.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Marno, nice piece of hardware. I noticed on the photo that the bracket
to keep the anchor in the roller doesn’t fit anymore; are you going to
solve this?
About the weight: I think that 70 lbs is enough for a primary anchor.
You can always shackle a second anchor to the first to sit behind the
heavy first one.

Sorry about the link, I copied it from Front Page and obviously

We will be crossing in December next year and are really looking
forward to getting back to the warm weather. Will you still be down
South then?
We only have 5/16th high tensile (which is strong enough I believe,
just nice to have the extra catenary)we have a Simpson Lawrence and
that is all our Gypsy will fit, when we got the boat it came with
3/8ths high tensile and we joined that to the 150 feet of 5/16ths of
second hand chain that we got from Bacon’s. I am a bit slow to notice
things sometimes, but I did notice that the bow was sitting down an
inch or two below what it should have… That 3/8ths now sits in
one of our cockpit lazarettes just in case we have to put out a second
anchor. The second hand stuff we got is now going to be replaced due
to it getting too rusty.
With any luck we won’t be doing too much anchoring in deep water, so
we won’t have to test the windlass too much.

Gday Michel,
You have eagle eyes. You are right, the shank of the Delta is too
tall for the original bracket. The old one was bent from the chain
jumping over the round bit on the side of the roller occasionally when
lifting the anchor. I am going to have a new one made and I am trying
to come up with a better design without replacing the whole lot,
although I would have liked to be able to carry two anchors on the bow.
My plan for bad weather is to put my CQR and Danforth out chained
together, using the old 3/8ths high tensile chain that I have.
I need to replace my primary anchor chain, get my 300 feet of double
braid anchor line eye spliced (I haven’t been able to do it) and
another 300 feet of three strand line and I will consider my ground
tackle “adequate”.

Hey Marno,
There was an OZ flagged Freedom 40 hauled out at one of the marinas on
the South River here (near Annapolis). It’s an aft cockpit and when
you first posted I wondered if it was you guys. As for being
“South”… we never seem to know what we are going to do until we do
it. Planning things in great detail seems to be the best way to avoid
doing something…
Great pictures on your site. I agree with your philosophy regarding
anchoring too. There is a 65 pound Bruce and a hefty fisherman style
anchor waiting for us in a friends storage shed in Hilton Head. 
We currently have a 35 pound CQR knock-off and about the same weight
Danforth. Our chain is 3/8 bbb so not the high test.
