For 4 years we had no odor problems. Last summer we started to get an
odor especially on one tack. Sealand provided all new hoses under
warranty and they were replaced over the winter. As an addition I
added a pump for overboard discharge where legal (no Y valve and
after the holding tank. When I connected the pump it wouldn’t pump
well and I was hearing a hissing sound.
I eventually traced it to the deck pumpout fitting. The fitting
itself was metal but instead of being one piece it was threaded and a
piece of pvc was threaded into it and to that the hose was attached.
Apparently the teflon tape or bedding compound on the thread gave way
since as soon as I held a rag with plastic wrap around it the hiss
went away and the pump worked perfectly. I’ll replace the fitting at
some point but for now I just used some bedding compound and all is
well. Although its possible this occured when the hoses were changed
and pressure was put on the fitting I think its possible this was the
source of the odor.
I thought I’d post this in case anyone else having a vessel of the
same vintage wanted to check out if you have the same kind of
fitting/problem. I don’t know how you would tell without a pump but
you could just put some bedding where the pvc meets the metal from
underneath or above just to be safe.

Thanks Alan for the tip, I will check that out. I find I have no smell if I keep the hatch and window closed in the Head…some one figure that out. are you getting smell back in to the head through the external vent?
I found on Bright Star that the holding tank, over 26 years of use,
had overfilled a few too many times and the vent line ran all the way
back and vented into the cockpit. Every time someone flushed, you
knew it back there. The vent line was flexible pvc, so I disconnected
it and poured about a quart of K.O down it and back into the holding
tank, letting the K.O. sit for as long as possible. This definitely
helped.

Lance I can try…when you disconnect the pvc…you leave it unconnected?..I do have someone that can help me do these tasks…a nice man and his wife…that I hired.
