Re painting - I just applied woodstain to the timber spars - I thought that this would help preserve them if they get left out in the UK weather for any period of time. By the way do not worry about slight curvature (bowing) of the two spars - I checked using the buckling of curved struts formula & found I had a safety reserve about 7X the highest load I could apply with the UK 85lb mast - so “slightly bent” is quite OK.
About the bevel at the ends of the two spars - that’s just me being fussy (as usual) - you can leave them square ended - just be sure ot put some padding under them to prevent marking or scratching the deck gelcoaat.

Thanks, Wilf. I need to plane down the sharp edges of the two pieces of lumber. The lumber yard had pieces that were 16 feet long. I don’t remember if I got them or not. What they did was split a 6" x 2" into a 2" x 3". Anyway, two long poles are in my garage waiting for me to get back. Did you paint them? I’m concerned about the 12 degree curvature to fit the camber (if that’s the right word) of the boat. This request was way beyond what the lumber yard could do. Anyway, I’ll be back where the boats are by next Thursday and have the week following off to fiddle with boats. I also have an I-210 to play with, which I plan to bring down and park next to my F-21.

By spacer strop I simply mean a loop of rope (strop) about 1 metre long that links & spaces the upper suspension point of the lifting tackle on the mast to the lashing around the mast just below the gooseneck . By 1 metre strop I mean about 2 metre of rope made into a loop by joining the two ends with a fisherman’s knot. Regarding the final set-up I realised that I have a couple of photos of the first time Ii set this up when I collected DAYDREAM from the marina - I’ll send these two photos to Max to put on the website. They consist of a before & an after photo - unfortunately I was busy hauling at the time so no “action” shot of the mast lift in progress. I’ll get a shot of that for you when I hoist the mast back into the boat for the Spring launch in April 2006.
Good suggestion to have a trial run - I set-up the rig in my garden & hoisted a bundle of water-filled plastic containers to check out the system before setting it up on the boat. It really is simple although it looks fairly exciting to bystanders. Call me if you have any questions.

Hi Wilf,I’m creating your hoisting device. I’ve had trouble finding lumber 16ft. long. I’m sure that’s a temporary problem and eventually I’ll track it down at my local lumber yard. I have the block (an old boomvang) and the bolt and the hing. Things are moving along. My question to you is, what is a spacing strop S? My boat is on its trailer close by, so I go fiddle with it every weekend. I’m sure I’ll have more questions, so send me your e-mail address, please, so we won’t bore the others with chit-chat. I plan to give this device a dry run where it’s stored before I take it to a lake where I can put it in the water year round. I may not have any help hoisting the mast either.
