Has anyone added a spinniker on a Freedom 40/40. I am thinking about
adding one but not sure of how I would rigg it on a fractional setup.

Consider the crazily effective rig developed by Garry Hoyt some years
back. It consists of an asymmetrical spinnaker mounted on a furling
gear, which is in turn mounted on a ball-bearing traveler and track
that is affixed on a pivot on the bow pulpit. This thing provides a
spinnaker rig that is very manageable, with downwind efficiency
because one can move the tack to windward out of the shadow of the
mainsail. I’ve kept the original Sailing World article because it’s
so unique. Herm

With the square footage of a tall rig mainsail and no shrouds to limit
the boom angle, I found I can outrun any 40-ish sized boat downwind.
Why bother with a spinnaker?

The Freedom 40/40 is already set up to accept a spinnaker. There is a
sheave in the mast just above the headstay and an extra exit box is
installed for the halyard. There was an empty sheave in the group of
deck turning cheek blocks and an extra stopper in the cockpit. All you
need is the halyard, the spinnaker, a Harken turning block for the mast
collar, sheets, and probably winches in the cockpit to manage the sheet
loading. I would stay away from getting overly complicated. A simple
cruising spinnaker would be best in a chute scoop. The system Herm is
referring to was very cool indeed and employed to great effect on the
short lived Freedom 24 but that would be complicated to mount on the
foredeck of the Freedom 40/40 and given the already excellent downwind
performance of this design with cruising canvas, you won’t find
yourself using a spinnaker very often. Good luck and happy sailing,

My 40/40 has a conventional spinnaker.
Track on the mast to raise and lower the mast end of pole
Down haul for the center of the pole (clam cleat on each side of the
cock pit)
Extra line to raise the pole
Extra halyard
Down haul for the center of the pole (clam cleat on each side of the
cock pit)
Set of sheets and guys so a dip pole jibe can be done.
Extra blocks to run the sheet and guy
Two extra winches

Boy, I sure don’t miss all that gear associated with the
traditional spinnaker. I had one on my last boat and don’t miss it a
bit. The gun mount is quite a bit simpler and easier to rig.

Very true about the gun mount on the F-32
On the photos section I think I have a picture of the first time
my kids set the spinnaker all by themselves – the oldest was 13.

Consider moving to the Pamlico Sound area when you retire. We sail

On our Freedom 45, we have a North cruising gennaker with a sock. The
halyard is fractional, just above the forestay. The tack goes to a
fixed loop of line on the bow, and we bring the sheets back to turning
blocks pretty far aft, up to winches on the cockpit coaming, and into
small clam cleats. It adds around 2 knots in most reaching conditions,
although it is more efficient to wing out the jib if sailing ddw.
To offset the forces of a powerful asymmetrical sail, Paul Dennis
added running backstays that tack to the deck approximately halfway
between the mast and the aft of the boat. this has proven to be an
excellent system for us. It’s not as complex as a standard sym
spinnaker, is easily handled by two (or one - I’ve flown it solo using
the autopilot), and does provide significant speed advantage off the wind.
