When using the long sock, I added a large plastic bucket with the bottom cut out to the front end of the sock. I then tied lines to the front of this bucket so that it angled up a bit. This improved the chances of the spinnaker going into the sock without snagging on something. But it still snagged sometimes. If racing with one or more crew, I would always have someone help it into the sock, to get things done as fast as possible. (This is using the spinnaker with the gun-mount pole).
For racing with the spinnaker, I would use the gun-mount pole. You can move it off center to weather quite a bit, which in lighter air is a real advantage, as it gets most of the spinnaker out from behind the mainsail. (Whether doing this is PHRF legal in any given club is an open question.)

Charlie, et al
I'll be anxious to hear answer to your question. I have the long tube sock/bag for my spinnaker and can't figure out how to use it. I don't know who the manufacturer of the sock/bag is, but I'll look today when I go over. I did get an e-mail from--well, now that I look at it, it turns out to be from you--talking about the Harken roller furler and the Doyle "UPS" sail. I sent Doyle an e-mail but haven't heard from them. Then there was the e-mail from zemach99, George (7.21.04) where he said he got rid of the spinnaker yard the started flying the spinnaker with a pole from the mast.

I would appreciate your information and advice on the proper shape,
attachment, and use of your spinnaker launching
tube/sock/bag/devices?. I own and race F21 #212, “Windfall”. The
boat came with the spinnaker and a long tubular nylon bag. I mounted
the bag by running it along the lifeline, and turning the open end
upward into the opening at the top of the bow pulpit. This created a
crease in the bag where it turned upwards, which in turn restricted
the smooth launching and retrieval of the spinnaker. The open end of
the bag is not nearly as wide as the mouth of the bow pulpit, and
the 4 lines on the mouth of the bag did not tie in any reasonable
manner to the pulpit or stanchions. This bag was not made by
Haarstick; I called Haarstick and they said that their bags have
a “curve” built into the tube, to alleviate creasing; and that their
bags attach to the mouth of the bow pulpit via a continuous line
passed through grommits and around the tubes that form the top of
the pulpit. Please share your experiences; and designs of your
launching socks/tubes/etc; and your suggestions and advice. Thank
You. Charlie Livaudais
