Has anyone replaced the cap at the top of the mast. The boat we are
looking at has deteriorated in the salt air and needs replacing.
Any idea what the cost would be?
Also how do folks set up an SSB antenna given there is not
backstay? Do you run something off of the bow and if so how does
that look? If not do you use a whip antenna?
Thanks.

I’ve used a Shakespeare 25’ whip antennea with great success
throughout the Caribbean. Everyone always comments on what a great
signal I have. This is with a SEA-235 SSB.

I also use a Shakespeare SSB antenna mounted on the
stern of my Freedom 38. This antenna is working as
good if not better that a stay antenna. The secret is
in the proper grounding of the radio and the routing
of the transmission line from the tuner to the
antenna.

Can you describe your grounding system - location, size, routing
path, etc…?
I’m thinking of installing SSB on my F36.

I have a SEA-235 on my 40/40 with a Shakespear antennea & get great
reception and transmission. The radio is by the nav station and the
tuner is in the lazarette right next to the antennea. Coax and
control lines run from the radio to the tuner. The tuner is
grounded through (2) 12"x3" Dynaplates which are through-bolted.
Copper foil connects the 2 plates and the tuner. A key thing is
keeping the plates clean and regularly cleaning the grounding
connections.
