stain on hull/deck and starting of engine

Posted by msheehan1 (msheehan1@…>)

3 problems

  1. Rust stains on deck? Seems like someone in the boat yard send
metal shaving around, this rust stains.

  2. I also have some stains on the hull. I have tried rubbing
compound, grease remover, windex, softscrub etc etc. Nothing take it
    out.

  3. Last problem. My diesel engine will not start. I have had the
same problem the last two years. I get it running. I run it for
about 15-20 minutes and it will not start again. It turns over etc
etc. Can the engine get flooded? I had to have the boat yard look at
it last year and it started for them and everything work fine for the
year. What am I doing wrong.

Thanks,

Mike, I would check the shutdown cable for kinking or more particularly for
it returning the shut off lever to the proper start position. You may even
readjust it to be sure it is not shutting off the engine when you think it
is ok to start. I know mine has a fine edge where the engine runs or does
not run.

3. air in the lines could also do it. You
could rebleed the system. I had one situation where the valves were set wrong
for the dual parallel Racor filter setup after recommissioning in the spring. the
engine initially started and ran for about 20 minutes then died and would not
restart or stay on more then a few seconds.

on the ‘air in lines’ subject -

make sure to also check the return line from engine to fuel tank for
blockages. these can create a backpressure that ends up acting very
much like air in the lines and will starve the engine just as
thoroughly.

Maybe you are aware, but this needs to be said for the record. If
you are having trouble starting your engine and you are cranking for
more than 15 sec., shut off your raw water intake. Reopen it upon
starting. The danger is hydrolock which can do severe and expensive
damage.

Hydrolock is the condition which arises when the aqua muffler and
exhaust hose fill up with water from the action of the raw water
pump. Normally this water is expelled by the force of the exhaust
gasses, but with a non starting engine, the water will back up
through the exhaust valves into the cylinders. Since water is not
compressable, the resulting shock load can damage many moving parts
and some non moving ones. Head Gasket, Valve train, piston, con rod,
rings, to name a few. All expensive.

1 and 2) Try “Sno-Bowl” toilet bowl cleaner. It’s a strong bleach of
some sort. It’s at the Dollar stores. For tougher stuff
try “Barkeeper’s Friend.” It’s in many grocery or hardware stores.
It’s powdered oxalic acid, it’s sorta looks like “Comet” but it
doesn’t have abrasives. Make a paste of it directly on the stain and
rub (and rub, and rub, and rub…) with a damp sponge. With enough
patience almost every stain will come out. It only works on smooth
surfaces though, not on non-skid.

  1. How do you get it going again? There’s an old mechanic’s saying
that I`ve found to be true: “A running diesel that stops has a fuel
    problem.”

I’d go over the fuel system, bit by bit, start to finish, being
completely anal about it. Consider everything in the fuel system to
be guilty until proven innocent. Is air getting in the fuel line? If
it’s not air getting in and there’s no fuel leaking out, I’d check
for fuel starvation (a clog.) Originally there was a screen in the
bottom of the pick-up tube of the tank. I’d definitely pull that out
and leave it out. Round up the usual suspects after that: clogged
filters, collapsed or deteriorating hoses, loose fuel fitting bolts,
those (#$%*@^) little copper “crush” washers at the joints of the
metal fuel lines, etc. I’d just get rid of the old fuel, too, and
clean out the inside of the tank through the inspection port with a
plastic scrubby pad soaked in alcohol-based fuel dryer, using elbow
grease and paper towels. Get all the gunk out of the bottom. Get the
inside of the tank shiny bright. Refill with fresh fuel. Pump enough
fuel through the lines to insure that there’s fresh fuel everywhere.

Be obsessive. Go nuts. In my F32, I have more trouble with the fuel
system than everything else combined. It’s almost always fuel.

Beyond fuel I’d look at the exhaust elbow. It clogs up with rust over
time and the engine can’t expel the exhaust. It’s a consumable part,
I just change mine every 4 years or so. If you can’t find one,
Mastery Engines in St. Petersburg FL has them. (Unfortunately,
everything will probably be rusted together so hard you’ll have to
buy the exhaust tail piece and the pipe nipple that connects them,
too.)

The stains will come out with Oxalic acid, available from any hardware
store… Make a solution of i cup to 1.5 gallons,brush on,and the iron stain
should come out . Rinse with fresh water. Good for waterline stains as well.

Check the mixing elbow. Mine gets clogged and then shuts the engine down. I clean it and it runs fine!

Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It’s not radically different. Just radically better.
