Starlink Mini

Anyone installed starlink on their boat? I am thinking of the starlink mini mounted on my stern rail. If you do use this, how much data is good for you? How was connecting to your 12v system?

Interesting question. Looks like the mini pulls from 15 to 45 watts based upon reddit reports. Will connect directly to 12vdc according to specs. I am anxious to hear how you proceed with this.

On a related note. I have found T-Mobile cover vastly improved on the delta. I had been contemplating starlink but have had second thoughts with this improvement in my immediate cruising area.

I’ve been running a mini off my inverter (with only starlink it draws about 3 amps). I tried running it off 12v into a car cigarette charger but it would often cut out, I think 12v is not enough for it. Looking for a 24v step up converter at the moment which will apparently fix the problem (as per my electrical engineer brother)
Otherwise Im very happy with my mini!!

Thanks for the input! Much appreciated. From reading, agree with JL1925 in 12v solely may be sketchy- I’ve seen 12v to48v conversion kits for the mini- I’m probably not that interested in going those routes. I have att for cell coverage (similar coverage map zones with TMobile). Mostly I get coverage for near coastal (out 25 nm) use for mfd and navionics on phone and iPad . What I like is streaming video at night- frivolous I know- and att on roam just gets by - sometimes not. I’ll keep exploring.

Simpler even might be a good data plan if you are mostly on the coast. Starlink is great for streaming but if you are more than 12 miles from shore it charges you $2 per GB which risks bankruptcy!

Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger, I also use my connection to stream. As a matter of fact that is about all I use it for. Most of my nav stuff tides, current, charts, weather are on apps and live on the phone, no connection required.

I take that back just a little, I do use the internet for troubleshooting stuff which, as my various posts indicate, happens a lot
