strengthing carbonfiber mast

Posted by chamela7 (chamela7@…>)

Aloha freedom owners, I have a 1982 freedom 35 that I bought new and
have sailed hard with out mishaps. The masts have developed hairline
cracks horizontaley over the years, and I was wondering if any one
has come up with something to put on them to seal and strengthen
them. If so I would love to hear from you. P.S. I am a die hard
wishbone fan and have invented a bridle/bearing for the wishbone mast
conection that works really well. Aloha, Chamela.

This has been discussed many times. The cracks(fissures in the gelcoat) are
cosmetic, and do not affect the structural integrity of the masts. If you
fill them, the filler will crack unless it is flexible. I painted my masts
with white Awlgrip, and left the cracks alone. Looks OK,and keeps water out
of the cracks…

The water comes down my mast also. Pretty sure it is not coming down from the
cracks… No matter what my 38 F is the love of my life! My Brittany even
poops on her deck and it works out wonderfull!

Chamela: Can you describe your bridle/bearing for the wishbone
rig?

John Jones 1982 Freedom 33 “Lady Marion”

Mr J.Jones on ‘’ Lady Marion " here is a description of the bearing/bridle prototypype that I made for my boat. its appx.8" high 1/4"steel pipe cut in half. the pipe has a cercumfrence appx. 1/2’ larger then the mast so that if you put the two halfs together around the mast its real loose. now I put a flange on the two pipe halfes so they can be bolted together and I also put a flange on the top and bottem of the pipe this flange faces outward and go completly around the pipe and have 1/4’’ thick flat teflon bolt to the top and bottem. The tefflon over laps the inside of the pipeso that when the pipe is bolted together around the mast the only thing that touches the mast is the 1/4’’ tefflon on the top and bottem of the pipe. Now on the sides of the 8’’ pipe I welded two 1’’ pipe coupllings these attach to the wishbone. the wishbone has a “t” clamp with the ‘‘t’’ end faceing in and also being a 1’‘coupling there is a 1’’ pipe that fitts in to the couplings on both sides.
The results have been unbeliveable. the wishbone goes up and down under all conditons and never binds. I know my description is probably hard to follow. If you like I can always send you a plan or photo.I have been useing the proto type for about 8000 miles and need to remake it in stainless. Thank you Jack george on ‘‘Chamela’’ 33ft.#007 alohaJohn Jones <a1johniam@…> wrote:
