With the recent discussion of Strong Track I couldn’t hold myself back
from making a plug for www.islandplanetsails.com
We handle Strong Track and can compete with any other vendor. As a
former 39 owner I think the combination of Strong Track and rigid boom
vangs are one of the best upgrades you can make. I didn’t get around
to the Strong Track on our boat but if we had kept Entropy we would
have put it on. I first learned about Strong Track while working for
Banks Sails in Florida. It is simply a good value. I don’t even handle
any other track systems because Strong Track works well for the
majority of sailors.
If anyone is offended by the commercial nature of the post I aplogize.
But I figure if someone is going to buy the system they might as well
see what we can offer plus every bit of business we get puts us that
much closer to owning another Freedom, and hopefully next time around
we won’t have one of those pesky mortgages.
Dave,
I looked at your website; very nice! On the new boat I have
Strongtrack on the mizzen and Antal on the main; I’m curious about
the difference in behaviour and performance!

Antal is a very good system. I’m surprised they used two different
track systems on your boat. It’s great that it’s already installed.
The only drawback of Antal is price.

Can anyone tell me the differences and preferences between the Harken sail track and the Strong Track? I work for West Marine and can get the Harken for a substantial savings. Still trying to figure out what to do. I looked into the horizontal drill which is about $300.00 I think. I could probably get the Harken for a little over $1000.00. As I understand it, the Harken cars are a bit more elaborate than the Strong Track cars. The biggest difference, I believe, is that the Harken track is aluminum and, on a Freedom, must be attached with epoxy or something similar. The Strong Track is a slippery polymer which is simply slid up the mast in the existing track. My sail maker said that Harken was somewhat better, but at a significantly higher price. If price is not the issue for you, then consider installation.

The reason for two different track systems is probably that the main
mast (with Antal) was replaced 5 years ago at the expense of the
insurance co. The original mast had been hit by lightning with
unclear consequenses. They probably chose Antal because it was
expensive.
